The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 16, 1988 - Page9 99 k ' N' 2 ~ I e *zu Festval C ture cinema BY MARK SHAIMAN Yasujiro Ozu is considered to be the "most Japanese of all the knational directors." Thus the Center of Japanese Studies made a perfect choice in selecting him to be the subject of their fall film fest and retrospective. Beginning tonight and continuing each Friday night for the next 11 weeks a different film by Ozu will be presented, including the classics Late Spring, The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice,. Tokyo Story, and "Autumn Afternioon. There will be 11 films by Ozu, in addition to two films about him which open and conclude the fest. All the showings in the fest are free. 'The first film tonight will be Tokyo-Ga , Wim Wenders' (Wings of Desire ) documentary of his trip to Tokyo to experience the setting of bOzu's work. This will be followed by The Only Son - Ozu's first sound picture - and the story of a self-sacrificing mother whose son refuses to do the same for his own family. The theme of traditional values is extremely important in the films of Ozu. His works consistently deal with the lives and domestic pro- See Festival, Page 10 Flesh. Garbo, Gilbert give all BY MARK ShAIMAN SILENT films were not meant to be entirely silent. Quite often live music would accompany and thus enhance the film, allowing the show to appeal to the ears as well as the eyes. Tonight offers a chance to participate in such an event when the Ann Arbor Chamber Orchestra per- forms an original score in con- junction with the showing of the silent film classic Flesh and the Devil. The film stars the two top romantic leads of the '20s, John Gil- bert and Greta Garbo. Gilbert por- trays Leo von Harden who falls in love with Felicitas von Rhaden (Garbo) at first sight. His attentions to her insult Felicitas' husband, who challenges Leo to aeduel and loses. But Leo is forced to enter the foreign legion, entrusting the care of the new widow to his best friend Ulrich. When he returns things have gotten worse. But it's melodrama at its best. Part of the fun of the on-screen romance between Gilbert and Garbo is knowing about the now legendary off-screen activities. Director Clar- ence Brown recalled, "Those two were alone in the world. I used to take the crew over to another part of In 'Flesh and the Devil' John Gilbert and Greto Garbo's on-screen activities match their off- screen passion. the set and let them finish what they were doing. It was embarrassing." More can be learned about John Gilbert thanks to another attraction of the evening. Leatrice Gilbert Fountain, author of Dark Star , the story of her father's motion picture career, will be present to address the audience on Hollywood of the '20s and '30s, and then to sign copies of her book. Still, the prime attraction of the night is the live music. The Ann Arbor Chamber Orchestra will be joined by theater organist Dennis James. Carl Daehler, director of the Orchestra, has already combined talents with James in accompanying over a dozen classic silent films. Daehler himself compiled the score for tonight's film by drawing from music composed previous to 1926, the year of Flesh and the Devil. The music of Grieg, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Faure, and Elgar -selected because these com- posers all deal with the theme of unfaithful love - will be 4t incorporated in the program. More than 50 selections have been adapted to fill the 90 minutes that the film runs, along with interludes on the organ. Flesh and the Devil is a clastic film, but with the live performaiee of the original score, and kJie presence of Fountain, it promisesto be a classic s:'ening. FLESH AND THE DEVIL will be performed at 8 p.m. at i4e Michigan Theater. Tickets are $10 and $7 for students and seniors with valid I.D.- NW* A BOLD STATEMENT v- NEWSWEEK Minority Internship Starting this fall, Newsweek magazine is sponsoring an internship in its Detroit Bureau for students of Black, Hispanic or Native American origin.
