Last all-male dormitory on
campus turns co-educational

BY REBECCA BOYD
It used to be that men lived in the
central campus residence halls -
West Quad, and East Quad - and
that the women lived on the "Hill,"
in Mosher Jordan, Stockwell, and
Alice Lloyd. . That's all changed
now, and while there are still some
all-women halls, the last male-only
dorm, Fletcher Hall has finally gone
coed.
About 75 students live in Fletcher
Hall; one-third of those are now
women, said John Heidke, associate
director of housing.
Heidke said the decision has been
pending for at least three years. "It
was a matter of determining whether
there were women who wished to
live there and whether there were a

balance of men's and women's spaces
(in campus housing)," Heidke said.
HEIDKE said the policy passed
this year due to a need for the space
and the support of the Fletcher resi-
dents.
Fletcher Building Director Brenda
Herman said some of the men living
in the dorm felt strongly that
Fletcher should be coed, and that
there did not appear to be a lot of in-
terest in keeping it all male.
"The residents we surveyed liked
living in that residence hall but they
didn't choose to live there because it
was an all-male hall," Herman said.
"They chose to live there because of
the location, because they could cook
their own meals, and because of the
low cost."

Heidke said a single room in
Fletcher costs $1,904 for the year,,
which covers all utilities including a
telephone. Fletcher does not have a
cafeteria, so residents must prepare
their own meals in a kitchen in the
building's basement.
IN COMPARISON, the esti-
mated cost of living in a traditional
residence hall is $3,250. That price
includes 13 meals a week.
Herman said Fletcher, located on
Sybil Rd., will probably remain
coed. "If at some point in the future
we get a lot of requests for an all-
male residence hall, then it will be
considered. It just depends on the de-
mand and what students need and
want," she said.
Senior Mike Walker, who lived in

AUTOMOTIVE

the hall last year as well as this year,
prefers the hall coed.
Walker said most of the men who
are living in Fletcher also lived there
last year and know each other.
LSA JUNIOR Susan Marlow,
a transfer student, said however, that
she has not had problems meeting
the men.
"It's going to take a while before
they learn to accept that women are
here," she said. "But they're not be-
ing difficult about it, they'll come
and talk. Last Tuesday night we (the
hall) had a movie night. I was told
there were more people down there
than there were for the Super Bowl,"
Marlow added.
