The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 16, 1988 - Page 5 Pep rally to psych up fans and help charity BY JEFF KLEE With the invasion of the number-one ranked University of Miami football team just one day away, many Wolverine diehards will gather tonight at a pep rally that will also raise funds for an Ann Arbor char- ity. Funds raised for the ninth annual "Run for the Roses" pep rally, sponsored by the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, will be given to the Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor, an organization that provides low-cost housing for families with young children who are being treated at the University Hospital. Neither last year's disappointing 8-4 football sea- son, nor last week's heartbreaking loss to Notre Dame are expected to affect the traditionally strong turnout at this event. "We're expecting about 300 or 400 people," said LSA senior Brad Brown, special events director at Al- pha Delta Phi. Brown said Ann Arbor officials, in anticipation of the crowd, will close State Street between Madison and South University during the rally to provide standing room for those who cannot fit on the fraternity grounds. Highlighting the event will be a special awards pre- sentation honoring former Michigan Athletic Director Donald Canham. Canham, who served as athletic director for 20 years before retiring last June, will re- ceive a plaque presented by the Greek system recogniz- ing his many accomplishments for Michigan athletics. "I was very surprised," said Canham who will attend the rally. "I appreciate it very much." Also scheduled to appear are football coach Bo Schembechler, the Michigan Cheerleaders, the Michi- gan Marching Band, and, if past traditions continue, some of the team's star players. Revenue for the Ronald McDonald House will be raised by selling advertising spots on a banner that will hang above the stage. Brown expects to present the or- ganization with a check for close to $750, considerably higher than the $450 that was raised last year. The pep rally will get underway at 7:00 tonight at the Alpha Delta Phi house, 556 South State. JESSICA GREENE/Dily Paul Moffitt, president of the College Democrats, urges students to get involved in the fall campaigns. "The challenge of today is to get Democrats elected," he said. 'Democrats assail foes, urge student participation BY MICHAEL LUSTIG State Attorney General Frank Kelley, head of Massachusetts Gov. 'Michael Dukakis's Michigan presidential campaign, urged students to get involved with the fall campaigns, invoking John F. Kennedy's famous quote: "Ask not rwhat your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." The message at last night's meeting of the College Democrats was "get involved." Candidates and iparty activists implored about 150 'students to join campaigns with I their time, money, and efforts while they assailed Republicans George Bush, Dan Quayle, and Carl Pursell. State Sen. Lana Pollack, running 'against Pursell, a six-term U.S. representative from Plymouth, used 'environmental issues as her ammunition. She noted an environmental group recently labeled Pursell one of the most anti- environment members of Congress, and ridiculed Bush's recent visit to the shores of Lake Erie where he said he was an environmentalist. SHE ALSO criticized Pursell t for leading a fight in Congress to cut $6 billion from the Clean Water Act in 1985. The bill, which would have j frozen funds for environmental ,cleanup efforts, failed to pass *Congress. *Kelley launched a second round of environmental criticism on Bush, saying his office has collected more fines for environmental pollution than the federal Environmental Protection Agency has. Speakers fired another barrage of attacks on Bush using women's issues. Kelle.y said Bush told women at the Republican National Convention last month, "You're gaining economic power, and I won't take that away." But Kelley noted that women on the average earn 64 cents to every dollar that men earn. He reminded voters that many important positions in Dukakis's campaign are held by women, including those of campaign manager and foreign policy advisor. Jennifer Granholm, a Dukakis campaign organizer from the state Democratic party, said the premise that women would vote for Quayle, whom she referred to as "Bush Light," is "a little insulting to women." SHE THEN told a story of meeting a couple in Hamtramck, where Quayle recently visited. The husband was wearing a Bush-Quayle button, and chided the wife when she took a Dukakis button from Granholm, saying that Quayle was cute. "I'd sleep with him," the wife said, "but I won't vote for him." Scott Sheets, a Michigan State senior and campus coordinator for U.S. Sen. Donald Riegle's campaign, said the problem facing Riegle is his lead in the polls, which show him a 3-1 favorite over his opponent, Jim Dunn. "People don't think we have much of a race," he said. State Rep. Perry Bullard (D-Ann Arbor), seeking a tenth term, borrowed Rev. Jesse Jackson's line, "Keep hope alive" in urging students_ to join the campaigns. The College Democrats and the individual candidates' campaigns will be leafleting, telephoning, and helping to register voters throughout the fall. The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 10. Festifall Continued from Page 1 station with several radios and equipment. Festifall, now in its fifth year, is run in conjusnction with SODC, the Student Alumni Council, Michigan Student Assembly, and the Univer- sity Activities Council. Twenty more organizations are participating this year as compared to last year. Festifall will run from 11 to 4 today, although next Friday has been, reserved as a rain date. u. PASS IT AROUND!
