The loss spoiled the Wolverines' first match in Crisler Arena and dropped their season record to 8-2. Michigan was a step ahead of Eastern in the first two games. Everywhere the Hurons hit the ball, the Wolverines were set to return it. Marie Ann Davidson, Julia Strun, and Karen Marshall served up 13 of the 15 points in that game. Marshall and Davidson continued to serve well in the second game, but the Wolverines fell behind, 12-8. Then Kim Clover joined the parade of hot servers, getting three straight points. With the score tied at 12, Eastern's top server, Kim Relyea, had a chance to put the Wolverines away, but outside hitter Karen ' Marshall's dig stopped the Hurons' attack and the Wolverines took back the serve. Davidson went on serve three straight points for a 15-13 victory. The Wolverines appeared on the verge of another comeback in the third game. The Hurons, at 14-6, were a point away from winning this game, but Michigan stormed back with seven straight points. Then Huron star Roxanne Munch began to come alive. The third game became almost an individual dual between Munch and Michigan's Wendy Raber, as the two players were making spectacular blocks, digs, and kills. Munch, on her third try, served a winner and the Hurons pulled out a slim victory. "In the third game I was trying to be aggressive and keep our team in the game," Raber said. "We were on the comeback, so I wanted to put the ball down and get the point right away." Huron coach Nona Richardson said: "We started getting our passing together and we were able to run multiple offenses. We had nice defense as well and started playing a better all-around game." Munch was unstoppable in the fourth game, putting the Hurons up, 7-0. Raber came back with a soft tap over the net for the first Michigan point, and later served two winners to narrow the Hurons' lead, but Munch responded with two big kills, each winning back the serve for the Hurons. With the score at 14-7, Munch served up the final point to tie up the match. "This was our coach's first game, and we really wanted to win," Munch said. "We dug down deep, and Michigan seemed to tire out. We took advantage of making them run for shots." The final game was all Eastern. "We passed the ball well the first two games, but then we had we had some trouble getting it to the target spot we wanted to generate the offense from. If you can't pass the ball, you can't hit the ball, and you lose serve," Michigan coach Joyce Davis said.
