Often, PASS cable - TV brings their cameras to Crisler, while covering Michigan basket- ball. Tomorrow, however, when the cameras start rolling, they will follow the ball over the net instead of through it, while filming the women's volleyball match between. Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Michigan, despite its 8-1 non- conference record, is still considered to be a mediocre team in the tough Big Ten. The conference has four teams ranked in Volleyball Month- y's top twenty-five, including the number one ranked team, Illinois. The Big Ten is so strong that the Wolverines finished ninth in the conference last year with a 3-15 record, despite posting a 20-20 overall record. SO CAN anything be determined from the Wolverines strong non-conference showing? Others might ignore this strong start, but the Wolverines think they will make some other teams notice them. "I'm looking forward to the conference season," said senior outside hitter/setter Marie Ann Davidson. "I'm looking forward to playing some tougher teams. Our team plays better against more competitive teams. I'd like to see us be the upset team. Halfway through the season, I'd like to hear other teams saying we're going to have to start thinking about Michigan seriously." Davidson may end this season as the greatest offensive player ever at Michigan. Last season, she was an honorable mention All-Big Ten player, won a player-of-the-week award, and placed fifth in the conference in hitting efficiency. This season, Davidson has a chance to become the all-time leader in six offensive categories for the Wolverines. Coach Joyce Davis knows that Davidson's play will have a large impact on Michigan's Big Ten season, but the third-year coach has other players developing that will be able to help Davidson. JUNIOR middle hitter Kim Clover is solid at the net, leading last year's team in total blocks, block solos and assists. This year, Clover is leading the conference in hitting efficiency, tied for fourth in blocks per game, and tied for ninth in serving percentage. Clover is pleased with the team's progress, and is looking for a strong season for the Wolverines. "We have high expectations for this year," said Clover. "We are a much stronger team than the last two years, with a deeper bench. When Joyce started, we had seven freshman. It was a young team, and EMU we've built on that. We have five of those juniors still here, and will have more experience than most other teams in the conference." The Wolverines will need to have improved in order to beat the Hurons, who they play in their home opener tonight. The Hurons defeated Michigan twice last year. THE HURONS are led by Roxanne Munch, a player that Michigan wanted very badly, before she signed with Eastern. Munch is coming off an All-Tournament performance at the Hoosier Classic, where the Hurons lost all three games. Huron coach Nona Richardson is looking for some improvement against the Wolverines. "We have a strong front row, but the defense is still young and learning the system," said Richardson. "We are getting a lot more comfortable, and we're just trying to work out the kinks. We should be stronger against Michigan." Richardson has great respect for Michigan, but feels her club can stop the Wolverines. "Davidson is a nice player, and a good setter," said Richardson. "Their outside hitters are small, but powerful, and they pass well too. I think though that we're stronger in the middle, and we're quicker than Michigan." DESPITE their success against non-conference foes, the Wolverines Davidson ..record setter are not looking ahead of Eastern Michigan. Davidson and Clover are both looking for a competitive match. "Eastern has a couple of big hitters, especially in the middle," said Davidson. "They are a scrappy team that will play tough defense. In the past, we haven't played our best against them. We need to start out playing well, and then I think we can beat them." "Eastern is always unpredictable," said Clover. "You never know what the outcome will be." After Eastern, the Wolverines will travel to Penn State on Friday to play in the Penn State University Baden Invitational. Their next home match will be a Big Ten contest with Indiana on September 30. Michigan wins two in opener By LISA GILBERT The Michigan field hockey team embarked on their 1988 campaign last weekend, facing three non-conference opponents in St. Louis. This didn't figure to be an easy task for a young Michigan team. Nevertheless, the Wolverines rose to the occasion in defeating Chico State 2-1, Southern Illinois-Carbondale 3-2, and tying St. Louis University 2-2 in a heated double-overtime battle. Coach Karen Collins breathed a sigh of relief after the successful weekend performance. "We were a little bit jittery in the first game, but after the initial butterflies settled down, I noticed steady improvement in the next two matches," said Collins. Against Chico State, sophomore Josee Charvet opened the scoring with Michigan's first goal of the season 16 minutes into the first period. Junior Judy Burinskas, last year's second leading scorer; followed with a goal of her own seven minutes later. With the addition of four first year players along with the loss of four seniors from last year's squad, a definite starting line-up has not yet emerged. Collins has been shuttling players in and out, trying different people at different positions. "Hopefully everything will fall into place by the time we open the Big Ten season October 2 against Michigan State," Collins said. "This weekend should give us a pretty good indication of where we stand." Meanwhile, the Wolverines (2-0-1) will hit the road once again where they will play three top Northeastern teams' in Boston University, Springfield College and the University of Massachusetts: Both Boston University and University of Massachusetts are perennial top twenty teams., "We have a lot of work ahead of us in the next couple of days," stressed Collins. "Although we still need to make a few minor adjustments, I think we'll be able to hold our own." Precision Photographics, Inc.
