NEWS Administration begins code publicity campaign The Michigan Daily -- Thursday, September 8, 1988 - Page 15 M If You Are Still Looking For A Place To Live This Fall BY LISA MAGNINO Campus kiosks have long been a source for finding out about the lat- est local concerts, speakers, and events. But'starting this fall, they'll also serve notice of the University's new discriminatory acts policy - and the consequences of disobeying it - as part of an administrative campaign to publicize the policy, which was implemented last May. The campaign began in the mid- dle of June when orientation students received a handout addres- sing the new policy, which makes discriminatory acts punishable by 4eps up to expulsion. "The University trusts that most #udents share its vision of the com- 9munity," it reads. "Inevitably, some ?Y advertisement in the Daily, and pos- sibly commercials on WCBN and WUOM. The campaign does not detail the University's system for enforcing the code. But Marlene Francis, spe- cial assistant to the director of the Affirmative Action Office, said it does refer students to the University Affirmative Action Office for fur- ther information. Michael Phillips, president of the Michigan Student Assembly, has opposed the new policy in the past. He criticized the publicity campaign. "The University is a propaganda machine - it spews out policies that no one can possibly agree with. In this campaign all they're saying is 'For four years, close your eyes and go to class."' To counteract'the administrative campaign, MSA plans what Phillips, an LSA senior, terms a "reality campaign." "We don't have the money to compete with the University word for word, but we will use posters, and we can and will go door to door," Phillips said.
