De Burgos'
honored in

L.

BY MARCELLA HARB
MR ICHIGAN Union Minority
Student Services will showcase
Hispanic poetry past and present
tonight by coupling a short film on
Julia De Burgos, a brilliant Puerto
Rican writer, with readings by
student poets.
The Life and Poetry of Julia De
Burgos follows the writer from her
small-town origins in Puerto Rico
to her garnering of international
acclaim. De Burgos grew up in a
small village that appreciated her
intelligence and sense of self. The
village collected money in order to
send her to the University of Puerto
Rico, where she graduated with
honors.

She left Puerto Rico at a time
when thousands were leaving in a
mass exodus to the States. De
Burgos arrived in New York bent on
finding a way to improve social
conditions for the working class of
Puerto Rico and .soon became an
advocate for social reform, sup-
porting the Puerto Rican Political
Independence Party.
In 1943, she helped establish
Pueblo Hispanicos with Juan
Antonio Corretjer and worked for
two years as an editor and writer in
New York. Her first published
poem, "Poemes Exactos a mi Mis-
ma" (Exact Poems to Myself) was
released in a private edition in 1937.
The Institute of Puerto Rican Litera-
ture awarded her a prize in 1939 for

;oetry
film
her poem, "Cancion de la Verdad
Sencilla" (Song of the Simple
Truth).
De Burgos' rebellious spirit al-
lowed her to write in a richly
emotive style. Some of her most
romantic work is centered around the
Rio Grande del Loiza, a river near
her home town. She found solace in
the river, and tried to capture that
feeling in her work.
When De Burgos died in 1953 of
pulmonary disease and alcoholism in
New York at the age of 39, Puerto
Rico lost a great champion of the
working class as well as a great
poet.
After the film, there will be a
poetry reading by students Adoleena
Gonzalez and Elsa Barboza. Volun-
teers are still being sought to read
from their own work. Anyone who
wants to share poems especially
relevant to this year's theme, "Five
Hundred Years of H-ispanic Heritage:
1492-1992: The Women's Con-
tribution," is welcome.
AN EVENING OF POETRY will
begin at 7 p.m. in East Quad Room
126.

not the Reagan administration, but
rather the premise for Paul (Down
and Out in Beverly Hills) Mazur-
sky's new film, Moon Over Parador.
Jack Noah (Richard Dreyfuss) has
recently finished shooting a film in
the fictitious country of Parador,
(located somewhere in South Amer-
ica) and just as he begins to dread the
prospects of unemployment, he is
kidnapped and offered the part of a
lifetime. The dictator of the country
has suddenly died, and an impostor is
needed to maintain order. The Para-
dorian chief of police, Roberto
Strausmann (Raul Julia) has seen
Jack's convincing imitation of the
deceased, and since "Bobby" De Niro
and Dustin Hoffman aren't available,
he concludes that Jack will be perfect
for the part. Jack has other plans,
but after Roberto plays upon the act-
or's rather fragile ego, he jumps at
this new acting challenge.
The humor stems from Jack's
gradual adjustment into his character.
After mastering the all-important

dictatorial salute, he slowly grows to
enjoy his part. He begins incorp-
orating verses from "The Impossible
Dream" into his political speeches,
and even finds time to teach aerobics
to his Paradorian constituents. With
Roberto writing his lines, and with
the help of Madonna (Sonia Braga),
the dictator's mistress, Jack plays
the part perfectly. That is, of
course, until he grows bored with
the role and is ready to move on. -
Dreyfuss once again proves that
he's one of Hollywood's best. He is
engaging as both the slightly in-
secure actor and the Paradorian
dictator who resembles Mohammar
Ghadaffi and sounds a bit like Frog-
gy from the Little Rascals. RIaul
Julia (Kiss of the Spider Woman)
has some great moments as "the
eccentric and rather forceful chiefiof
police, who after dealing with Jatk,
simply concludes that he "hates
actors."
