BY NOELLE SHADWICK A revision of the faculty discrimination and harassment pol- icy will be proposed by the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs at next Monday's senate as- sembly meeting. SACUA voted yesterday to pro- pose at least one motion to endorse the establishment of a policy and delineate procedures to protect fac- ulty and staff from discrimination. Concerns about the legal and moral obligations the policy must have to faculty members prompted SACUA members to make the pro- posal. Sociology professor and SACUA member Gayl Ness said the policy has been challenged because of the fine line between harassment and freedom of expression. "The University stands against harass- ment, but we never aim to disallow any speech," he said. SACUA chair Beth Reed said the. committee would like to see longer- term harassment policies, and more clear punishments for harassment. Carl Cohen, philosophy profes- sor, has urged rejection of certain portions of the policy because vari- ous forms of speech may generate hostility but should not be consid- ered harassment. SACUA hopes that by raising questions such as "Are academic freedom and freedom of speech adequately protected?; What are the obligations of ordinary faculty?; should they be more specific? and what are the 'applicable unit proce- dures?"' a resolution to change spe- cific wording and perhaps imple- ment harsher punishments will be adopted. If the first motion is accepted, a second motion describing the current discrimination policy "as a basis, with modification, of an effective policy," will be made to be acted upon at a later meeting. account books At-A-Glance Planners Avery labels binder clips bookkeeping records book rings calculator tape calendars carbon paper clipboards columnar books computer sheet binders date books envelopes erasers file folders file frames file pockets folders glue pen refills graph paper gummed reinforcements hanging folder index cards pens poster board poster paint poster putty post-it notes press-on lettering push pins receipt books report covers ring binders rubber bands rulers sales books scotch tape sheet protectors spiral notebooks staplers staples 3-hole punch typing cartridges typing paper typing ribbon vinyl lettering Subjects Needed for Study of New Asthma Medication at University Hospital Patient Reaqiirements: Age 18-70 who use inhaled or oral medications for wheezing or shortness of breath. index tabs legal pads liquid paper loose leaf paper mailing labels masking tape memo books memo pads mounting tape padded envelopes paper clips paper cubes pencils pencil sharpeners We Must Exclude: Tlime Women of child bearing potential and people taking Corticosteriods (Prednisone) 1/2-1 hour visit every 2 weeks for 18 weeks $100.00 at completeion of study All medications, equipment, visits are paid for.
