ages require 512K of memory and two
disk drives. Some simple word-pro-
cessing programs squeak by on only
128K of memory, and still deliver a
modest range of features.
* What features do you need? A spell
checker? An automatic footnote in-
serter? A document translator that
can format files for use by other pro-
grams? If you are in a specialty field,
look into specialized software diction-
_ ary progr ats for the legal and medical
professions, among others. There are
programs on the market that can hefp
you create outlines, indexes, tables of
contents, and impressive reports.
Easy Editing
One of word processing's best fea-
tures is the ease with which you can
make corrections. You can also proof-
read, edit, and restructure any docu-
ment you write- before you print out
a single page. All this could give you
time to do extra research, or see a
movie. It all depends on the software
you choose, some of which is available
on a trial basis. For sources, check
with your school's computer support
services, or with user groups, electron-
ic bulletin boards, software stores, or
mail order houses.
More than 64 percent of all PC own-
ers use their machines for word pro-
cessing. They are almost universally
creating documents that are well-

ficiently produced.

Choose an advanced word processor by analyzing the kind of writing that
you do. If you are majoring in math, science, or business - any discipline in-
volving technical writing- advanced word-processing systems can provide
flexibility and text organization you might not otherwise have.
Advanced word processors let you select font styles (including foreign-
language characters) and specify such format options as type size, margin set-
tings, column formats, super- and subscripts, tables of contents, and indexes,
as well as simple graphics and mathematical calculations.
Software for advanced programs is expensive, and can be difficult to learn.
In all cases, make sure that any program you buy is compatible with your ex-
isting PC and printer.
