WHOWants to Know?

QI recently applied for
t credit and was denied. Is
there anything I can do?
AYes. First, find out why you
A* were turned down. By law,
the creditor must tell you the reason.
If the reason was a bad credit report,
the creditor must tell you which credit
bureau supplied the report as well as
how to get in touch with that bureau.
Under the terms of the Fair Credit
Reporting Act, you have the legal
right to know what's in your credit
report. Furthermore, if you have been
denied credit in the past 30 days, you
have a right to see, at no charge, the in-
formation on your record. And if you
find errors, you have the right to chal-

lenge any wrong information. The
credit bureau has to investigate anid in-
form you of its findings, usually
within 30 days. If the findings prove
you're right, you can insist that the
bureau inform any creditor who re-
quested a report on you in the past six
months.
Even if the credit bureau findings
disagree with your side of the story,
you can still file a short statement giv-
ing your explanation, and it will go in-
to your record.
If the follow-up to your credit
denial reveals that the reason was that
you don't have a credit record estab-
lished, or that you need to reestablish
one, you should take action to build
up your credit rating.

QI don't have a great deal
*of time to read up on lob
opportunities. What about video-
tape career guides?
A Using a videotape career
A" guide might be your answer.
There are many such tapes available,
but not all can be found at your local
bookstore or video shop. Check with
your school's career planning and
placement officer for a list of titles.
A visit to your school's career and
placement office might also turn up
other high-tech job-hunting aids. For
instance, many schools offer students
an interactive PC-based program
named Discover, in which they can
learn more about themselves by taking
an inventory of interests and abilities.
So, even if you're not looking for a
career in a high-tech field, you can
take advantage of some high-tech,
time-saving programs.

QMy roommate recently
* asked me to duplicate
one of my computer programs so
he could have his own copy.
Would this be legal?
AAlthough you don't think of
A" yourself or your roommate as
a "Software Pirate," this seemingly
harmless activity would violate the law
under the Federal Copyright Act.
This law protects original works, in-
cluding computer programs, from un-
authorized duplication. When you
purchase software, you are permitted
the following limited scope of activi-
ties:
" modifying the program to run on
another computer
" allowing a friend to use your pro-
gram while working on your computer
" making one backup copy of the soft-
ware
o selling or leasing the program and
associated backup copies
By duplicating the software for
your roommate, you. would fall out-
side of legally permissible activities.
This also applies to the user manual.
