NFL ROUNDUP

Rams
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Greg
Bell, taking over for the suspended
Charles White rushed for 139 yards
and scored a touchdown Sunday as
the Los Angeles Rams beat the
Detroit Lions 17-10.
Bell, a fifth-year pro who came to
the Rams in the Eric Dickerson deal
4 year ago, carried 27 times and
cored on a one-yard dive.
White, who overcame a cocaine
problem last season to lead the NFL
m rushing, last week was slapped
Wvith a 30-day suspension by the
NFL for violating its substance
abuse policy - when a high level of
alcohol was detected in his system.
A four-yard touchdown pass from

tame
Jim Everett to Damone Johnson
midway through the third quarter,
following a Lions' turnover deep in
their own territory, gave the Rams,
2-0, their winning margin.
Rams linebacker Mel Owens set
up. the score, sacking Chuck Long
who fumbled at the Lions' 13. Los
Angeles linebacker Carl Ekern
picked up the ball pitched it back to
teammate Mike Wilcher, who ran it
to the five-yard line.
Long was sidelined on the Lions'
next series, when he was sacked by.
Kevin Greene and suffered a slight
concussion. Eric Hipple filled in for
Long in the fourth quarter and the
Lions, 1-1, failed to socre.

Lions,
Mike Lansford's 46-yard field
goal tied the game 10-10 midway
through the third quarter.
Long moved the Lions ahead 10-7
in the second quarrter when he threw
a 12-yard touchdown pass to Gary
Lee.
Bell's TD earlier in the second
period gave the Rams a 7-3 edge.
Ed Murray's 30-yard fied goal for
the Lions was the only scoring in
the opening quarter.
Bell, a 5-foot-11, 210 pound
former Notre Dame star, was
acquired by the Rams from Buffalo
last season in the trade that sent
Dickerson to Indianapolis.
Bell had gained 1,100 yards as a

17-10

rookie with the Bills in 1984 but
later was hampered by injuries. He
suffered a season-ending shoulder
injury shortly aftger coming to Los
Angeles last season.
The 100-yard game was the fifth
of his pro career, but his first since
1985.
49ers 20, Giants 17
What appeared to be a game-
winning score for New York, 1-1,
was set up by a 32-yard punt return
by Phil McConkey. But the 49ers
took the ensuing kikoff and, after
losing two yards on the next two
plays, Montana hooked up with
Rice.
The 49ers, 2-0, opened the game
with Steve Young at quarterback.
The 49ers dominated the first
half, but left with a 10-10 tie
because of the Giants were able to
make the big plays. Simms hit
Manuel for a 12-yard touchdown in
the first period after a fumble by
Young.
San Francisco snapped the tie
early in the third period when Mike
Cofer kicked a 26-yard field goal.
Cofer had a 35-yarder and Doug
DuBose a one-yard scoring run in the
second quarter.
Raul Allegre kicked a 36-yard
field goal just before halftime to tie
the score.
Montana, who started the second
half, hit 10 of 18 passes for 148
yards and fullback Roger Craig
carried 18 times for 110 yards and
caught nine passes for 62 more as
the 49ers dominated the game
offensively.
Skins 30, Steelers 29
Chip Lohmiller kicked a 19-yard
field goal with 12 seconds left give
the defending Super Bowl champions
their first victory in two games.
Bubby Brister threw two long
touchdown passes and ran for another
score to help Pittsburgh take a 29-20
lead with 9:29 remaining. But a
seven-yard pass from Redskin
quarterback Doug Williams to
Kelvin Bryant cut the margin to 29-
27 with 4:48 left, and Washington
moved from its own 44 to the
Pittsburgh one-yard line in the final
three minutes to put Lohmiller in
position for his game-winning kick.
Pittsburgh, which missed what
turned out to be a crucial conversion
after taking a 19-10 lead, was
stymied in its bid to go 2-0 for the
first time since1982.
