The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 12, 1988 - Page 13 Irlsh Continued from Page 1 Now, Gillette took the field to attempt a game-winning 48-yard field goal. Already that night, he had connected from 49 yards. Going into the game, Gillette was seven-of-10 in his Wolverine career from that range. The kick went up, Gillette's head went down, and Michigan went out, 19-17 losers Saturday night. "I've been through that before," Gillette said. "I wasn't really nervous. I wanted to concentrate and hit the ball good, which I didn't. I popped it up. It's amazing that the game comes down to that." IT MIGHT NOT have come down to that had it not been for Michigan's previous drive. With Michigan driving toward a touchdown, tailback Tony Boles ran to the Notre Dame 12-yard line. But there was a flag on the play, a flag that stalled the drive and forced Michigan to kick a field goal that put them up 17-16. "We thought we were going to win the game, but then we had that 10-yard holding penalty," Michigan coach Bo Schembechler said. "Instead of punching it in, we had to settle for a field goal and that was tough. We could have ended it there." Early on, it appeared as if the Irish were going to end the game quickly. Michigan, who was expected to dominate both sides of the line, was outmuscled and outplayed. In the first quarter, Notre Dame grounded out 91 yards to Michigan's 20. THE IRISH opened up the scoring when Tim Brown's heir, Ricky Watters, returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown. It was Notre Dame's longest punt return for a touchdown since Joe Heap took one 94 yards against U.S.C. in 1954. Michigan fans saw Watters burn Michigan last season with an 18- yard run for a touchdown. But in the third quarter with the Irish leading 13-7, Watters went from hero to goat. He attempted to field a Gillette punt only to have his feet go out from under him and the ball touch his thigh. Bobby Abrams pounced on the loose ball at the Notre Dame 14. Two plays later, on a third-and- seven, quarterback Michael Taylor, who played a steady game, launched a pass into the corner of the end zone for Greg McMurtry. The pass missed but cornerback Stan Smagala interfered with McMurtry giving Michigan a first down at the five. Holtz didn't like the call. "I didn't think the ball was catchable and I thought the flag was a little late," Holtz said. "Even though I have glasses and wear bifocols, I thought that there was no way he could catch the ball unless he had a ticket in section 18." MICHIGAN worked the ball down to the one-yard line in the same way they attempted to move the ball all night - running it up the middle. They had gotten their first touchdown on a Leroy Hoard run up the gut and the play registered in the minds of the Notre Dame defenders. On fourth down, Taylor faked a handoff to Tracy Williams up the middle. The entire Notre Dame defense went for Williams, and no one payed any attention to Taylor. He trotted into the end zone untouched to put Michigan up 14- 13. "I kept feeling that they were coming hard at the corners," Taylor said. "If someone was open, I would have thrown the ball, but everyone on their team went in and I was able to run the ball." It wasn't surprising to see tl at the - happiest person to see Note Dame's kicker Reggie Ho pull out the game was Watters. "Oh man, you don't know how much of a relief that was," Watters said. "I was praying. The whole team was holding hands and praying. When Ho made that last kick, I felt so good. Then, when Gillette missed his, I said, 'Thank you, Lord.'" I must have said it 20 times. 'Thaik you, Lord."' JOHN MUNSON/Doily Starting tailback Tony Boles runs into Notre Dame Wolverines' backfield, leading Michigan in rushing with 83 cornerback Stan Smagala (29).
