Although the 1988 college football campaign is still in its infant stages, the Fighting Irish's 19-17 victory before 59,075 hysterical fans will rank among the season's finest. 4 It matched two nationally ranked teams filled with rich tradition. It was General Bo versus the feisty Lou Holtz. When asked about a call he disputed in the third quarter, Holtz said: "I think that's the only time I lost my poise all day I'm proud to say. I thought I handled nyself well." The players shared their respective coaches' zestfullness. As "Michigan ran off the field after its pre-game warmup, the two teams 0%ngaged in a minor scuffle. It was a game of high emotions throughout. In the third quarter, the "'television camera showed a teary-eyed Ricky Watters on the bench after he fumbled a punt deep in his own end. This game obviously meant something. 'A real nerve tingler Not unlike past meetings between these two football giants, the gamne included all the action and suspense of an Alfred Hitchcock 11assic. Something dynamic always seems to happen when these two teams face each other in Notre Dame Stadium. In 1980 Harry Oliver's 51-yard .field goal with time running out lifted the Irish to a 29-27 win over the .tOe Wolverines. Two years ago Michigan eaked past Notre Dame, 24- 23, when John Carney missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt with 17 seconds left. This game rode an emotional roller coaster. M rigan and Notre Dame traded leads four times in the second half. Fans were in and out of their seats so much the stadium resembled a giant jack-in-the-box. Wolverine quarterback Michael Taylor scampered into the end zone ,ate in the fourth quarter to give Michigan a 14-13 advantage. Back and forth the game went - and back again. After Mike Gillette's 48-yard field-goal attempt missed right as time ran out, Irish fans stormed the field as if their team had just won the national championship. Irish go home happy "We're not a great football team, but it is a win, and I was exceptionally proud," said Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz. "The only people happier than us has got to be CBS." CBS-TV went head to head with ABC-TV Saturday night, who televised the UCLA-Nebraska game. That game was decided early when the Bruins opened up a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. "Notre Dame is a good, physical team," Schembechler said. "They hit hard. More power to them. In my judgement they deserved to win. I won't deny that." E "I don't think we played well defensively, and I don't hink we protected our passer real well. Notre Dame played a very fine game." So the rivalry continues. Michigan and Notre Dame face each other the next six years, which is not good for anyone who is shorts on nerves. 11 a KAREN HANDELMAN/Dolly Michigan quarterback Michael Taylor races up field against as a Wolverine, completed eight-of-11 passes for 74 yards Notre Dame Saturday night. On first down, Blake Ezor, who gained 196 yards on 33 carries, was tackled for a one-yard loss. Ezor ran right for six yards on the next play, but fumbled the ball. Iowa 45, Kansas st. 10 Chuck Hartlieb passed for 253 yards and Brad Quast, a 240-pound linebacker, lumbered 94 yards with an interception return to tie an Iowa record and spark the 17th-ranked Hawkeyes. Auburn 20, K'tucky 10 Auburn's James Joseph ran fori10 yards and two touchdowns, but the seventh-ranked Tigers had to hold off a second-half Kentucky rally. Joseph's touchdown runs of one and 33 yards helped the hometown Tigers to a 17-0 lead early in the second half. But Kentucky quarterback Glen Fohr directed the Wildcats on a comeback bid that was stymied by an interception and two fumbles in the fourth quarter. Auburn won its opener in defense of its Southeastern Conference title, while Kentucky is 1-1 overall and 0- 1 in the SEC.
