Ppge 10 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 12, 1988 1 Simien sizzles while Guy lays backn BY BRIAN BONET Without question, the rowdiest back-to-school bash took place downtown at the Blind Pig Thursday night. An unlikely place considering all the front porch partying and wasted wandering that takes place each new school year? Not if you consider the hosts for the evening - zydeco demons Terrance Simien and the Mallet Playboys. Terrance Simien, a 22-year-old accordion player and vocalist from Mallet, Louisiana, has assembled the hottest thing to come out of bayou country since extra- spicy jambalaya stew. To date Simien and the Play- boys have yet to release an album, but have released a single, "You Used To Call Me," featuring Paul Simon on backing vocals (Simon discovered the band while researching zydeco music for Graceland) and have two songs on the Big Easy movie soundtrack. Thursday night, Simien and Co. treated Ann Arbor to a little Louisiana cooking of their own - zydeco style: Regional French dance music that is a free- wheeling potpourri of rowdy blues, accelerated accordions, percussive washboards, and funky bass lines. Needless to say after a three-course, er, three-set meal (three and one half hours long), everyone left with full bellies. -If you are ever in the vicinity of a Terrance Simien sh6w, do not miss it. You will dance, you will sing, ybu will sweat, and you will leave smiling. The Payboys boast an energetic rhythm section which inludes rubboardist Earl Sally (a rubboard is a metal t'rast plate with the surface of a washboard that is ijAyed with spoon-like metal utensils). Sally's playing a nd stage presence was frantic and simply did not allow feet to stand still. oThe Playboys also boast guitarist Sherman kobertson, who occasionally assumed the role of vocalist (usually on their blues-oriented material) and constantly played the role of entertainer, always grim- acing and exchanging nods with the dancing crowd. Sherman, who is also an inspired guitarist issued a Wvarning during one bluesy solo. "If y'all see Robert \ , ' , \ }: , ,, I F Cray, tell him a Louisiana boy is looking for him." And people are looking for Terrance Simien and the Mallet Playboys as well. According to drummer "Chubby" Carrier, a debut album from the band is in the near future, but first they have to choose among a few interested record companies. Carrier said the band almost signed a record deal with Alligator, but then Polygram voiced interest and so did Warner Bros. Still think Saturday night's gamenight guzzling was , the premature party hit on this crocked campus? Forget it. Remember, you were listening to Brent Musburger. Thursday night's Blind Pig crowd was listening to( Louisiana lightning. If you went to Friday night's Buddy Guy and Junior!' Wells show with a desire to hear more of Wells than Guy, you probably enjoyed the show. If you went to the Blind Pig solely to see Buddy Guy, you were pro- bably disappointed. With two great performers sharing" the same stage for a midnight set that lasted about an hour and twenty minutes, it's inevitably difficult, if not impossible, to get your fill of both. Guy began the show without Wells, and served as. vocalist as well as master guitarist blazing through frequent solos with ease and a smile. The stage was his, and so was the crowd, singing and clapping "Baby don't you want to go" (from "Sweet Home Chicago")i and often voicing lyrics before they left Guy's mouth., The guitarist responded to the anxious crowd by teasing, them with short riffs and an occasional shake of his head, saying, "S-h-i-i-i-t." But then Wells and his harmonica took the stage and Guy's rapport with the crowd quickly deteriorated as hew assumed a backing role as a rhythm guitarist with an. occasional solo, while Wells dominated the stage.: Wells' performance was impressive - he strutted around stage with an attitude, hitting harmonica solos" and voicing both tales and vocals to the crowd. But for, Guy fans, seeing their man in a backing role for the, majority of the set was frustrating. ~z.z Still think Saturday night's gamenight guzzling was the premature party hit on this crocked campus?
