w Line ready to 'dominate' By Pete Steinert At 6-2, 267 pounds Dave Chester is the "little guy" on Michigan's of- fensive line. Needless to say, the Wolverines stack a lot of beef up front. Their top eight players, who should all see action this season, average 6-4, 281 pounds. Greg Skrepenak tops the list at 6-8, 322 pounds. They're not only big, but they can play. The Sporting News OFFENSIVE LINE thought enough of Michigan's of- fensive line to rank it the best in the country. "I think we should be a dominant offensive line," said Dean Dingman. "That's our goal. We want to domi- nate at the offensive line. If we don't execute, that's the only reason we won't do it because we have the tal- ent." The line sports four fifth-year se- niors: center John Vitale (6-1, 273), quick tackle Mike Husar (6-3, 287), and guards Chester and Michael Dames (6-2, 268). Vitale and Husar are among the best in the country at their respective positions. Both earned Associated Press first-team All-Big Ten honors a year ago. They enter their fourth season in the Wolverines' starting lineup. "We'll be real deep," Vitale said. "We got a lot of guys that can play this year, and we've got a lot of depth and experience. So it's going to be a strong point for our ball- club." Incumbents Chester and Dames find themselves in heated battles with Marc Ramirez and Dingman, respectively. Dingman, a native of East Troy, Wis., drew three starting assign- ments as a rookie last season when Chester and Dames went down with injuries. Dingman moved ahead of Dames on the depth chart ataright guard when Dames missed all of spring practice with a shoulder injury. Ramirez, a 6-2, 271-pound redshirt junior saw action in three games last season. "I would say that both Chester and Dames will be battling for their lives to keep those two (Dingman and Ramirez) out of the lineup," Schembechler said. The task of taking over for John "Jumbo" Elliott at strong tackle falls in the hands of Tom Dohring, a 6-7, 277-pound junior from Dearborn. Dohring started six games last year at quick tackle for the injured Husar. Skrepenak, appropriately nick- named "The Barge," backs up Dohring. With four years of eligibility remaining, Skrepenak has potential written all over him. .* F'I V U U ... ,W. 14 I)ININ4p & IIIIIlII I r -12 U, \-I * S' 1 Casual Dining I Casual Dining I Casual Dining I Ethnic Dining I I l I f Senior Mike Husar, Michigan's 6-3, 287-pound quick tackle, is a pre-season All-America candidate.
