w w W w VV w W qw New rule affects Gillette record winds up PAT 2- point try By Adam Schrager A Mike Gillette blocked extra- point attempt could result in more than a one-point difference this year with the introduction of one of the NCAA's 34 rule changes for the 1988 season. The rule allows the defense to advance the ball on a failed extra- point attempt or two-point conver- sion. If the defense returns the ball for what would be a touchdown un- der normal circumstances, they re- ceive two points. If for some unknown reason the offensive team recovers and runs into its own end zone (which would nor- mally be a safety), the defense re- ceives ote point. Michigan head coach Bo Schem- bechler does not see any purpose in the rule. "You've ever been to a meeting, and it gets late in the, and you say, 'What the hell, let's pass something'?" Schembechler said. "It will make things interesting," said Northwestern quarterback Greg Bradshaw. "Who knows? It may just change the outcome of a few games. All it takes to be important is for it to happen in an important game." By Pete Steinert Mike Gillette is Bo Schembech- ler's place-kicker, and Michigan's head coach wouldn't want it any other way. "I would not trade him for anyone SPE'1AL TEAMS in the country," Schembechler said. After spending time in Schem- bechler's doghouse earlier in his ca- reer, Gillette has emerged as ar- guably the best kicker the Wolver- ines have ever had. "He's one of my favorite kids right now," Schembechler said. "He's a competitor, and he likes to win." "The pressure doesn't bother me," said Gillette, probably best known for his game-winning field goal against Iowa in 1987. "I like pres- sure. That's the only time I do good. Otherwise, I don't concentrate as much." Gillette, already Michigan's all- time leading field-goal kicker, needs 35 points to pass Anthony Carter as Michigan's all-time leading scorer. Gillette made good on 12-of-15 areer field-goal tries last year, and he missed just one extra point. Michigan, like several other Big- Ten teams, must replace an estab- lished punter in Monte Robbins. Last year Robbins averaged 43.5 vards a punt, which helped rank higan second to Ohio State in Lu. conference in net punting yardage. Gillette - a gifted athlete who catches for the Michigan baseball team - has emerged as Robbins' likely replacement ahead of freshman Eddie Azcona. "I'd say he's (Robbins) probably the best punter in Michigan his- tory," said Gillette, Robbins' backup for three years. "That's why they're going to be big shoes to fill. "He's my buddy for three years, and we hung around together a lot. Now I'm taking his place punting, so it's going to feel kind of weird." Speedsters John Kolesar and Allen Jefferson return after leading Michigan in punt returns and kickoff returns, respectively, a year ago. David Arnold, one of Michigan's starting cornerbacks, has blocked at least one kick or punt in each of his first three seasons for a total of five. The Wolverines have not surren- dered a kick return for a touchdown since 1957. Bobby Morse of Michi- gan State was the last opposing player to run back a punt, back in 1984. . I " Mike Gillette needs 35 more points to pass Anthony Carter as Michigan's all-time leading scorer. "This will provide for an unusual football situation," said Illinois head coach John Mackovic. "I don't know what I'll do if the situation comes up. I guess we'll just have to see what happens." Another rule change concerns where the ball will be marked when a player goes out of bounds. If a player crosses the sideline with the ball, referees will now mark the ball where it crossed the sideline rather than the spot where the player's body lands. This will influence many determinations of first downs.
