I Page 20- The Michigan Daily -I Friday, September 9, 1988 Irish' Continued from Page 1 about the quarterback position. Either Michael Taylor, Demetrius Brown, or Wilbur Odom will get the chance to call the signals. Some people have claimed that Schembechler isn't announcing his quarterback until game time to throw off Notre Dame. Bo says no. "This hasn't been done to trick them at all," he insisted. "I can tell them now that it isn't going to change the attack. The only way the attack would change is if I went in at quarterback, then you wouldn't have quite as much mobility." But Schembechler hints that he will go with experience. "The thing you have got to take into consid- eration in a big game on the road and all that is that you don't want to put a young guy in a bad position. We are leaning towards a veteran but that doesn't mean it is chiseled into stone." That would favor redshirt seniors Taylor and Brown and insiders claim that Taylor will get the nod. Accor- ding to Schembechler, Taylor has made tremendous strides this fall and his arm strength has improved considerably since last season. A good passing attack will be needed to help Michigan avenge last season's 26-7 loss against Notre Dame. Seven turnovers led to Schembechler's first opening-game loss in 19 years as Michigan's coach. Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz realizes that Michigan won't be as generous this time around "We can't count on the turnovers by Michigan this year," Holtz said. "The University of Michigan has a great football team. I'm not telling you anything that everybody in the country didn't already know. Mich- igan has few question marks, while we have a lot." Spoken like a true coach. Notre Dame does have some question marks, but not as many as Holtz would lead one to believe. One problem area is along the offensive line where only junior Tim Grunhard has any experience. On that same line is Notre Dame's senior tackle Andy Heck, a converted tight end, who has said that the criticism is unjustified. "I really got tired of people saying all summer that our offensive line was going to be such a problem," said Heck, one of the Irish's tri-captains. "Coach (Joe) Moore always tells us that the coaches can't win games for us, but that they can teach us to be winners. He says the winners in life have the best of everything- the best jobs, the best salaries, the best houses, the best looking girls. I just want people to know that all of us on the offensive line have great-looking girlfriends." The quarterbacking position has also been looked at critically. Junior Tony Rice has yet to prove that he can throw the ball as efficiently as he can run with it. His seven rushing scores last season marked the most since Terry Hanratty in 1967. But he'll have to be able to get the ball to flanker Ricky Watters, Notre Dame's most explosive off- ensive threat. Watters will be taking the place of Heisman Trophy winner WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 Tim Brown, while also returning punts and kicks. Some, including Schembechler, who saw Watters run for an 18-yard touchdown against the Wolverines last season, claim Wat- ters is even more dangerous than Brown. One question that Holtz doesn't have to answer concerns the linebackers. The trio of Ned Bolcat, Michael Stonebreaker, and Wes Pritchett should make it tough for Michigan to move the ball. Boles ineligible? BY STEVE BLONDER The athletic eligibilty of startings halfback Tony Boles remains in doubt, today, as questions persistc regarding an incomplete he received during the summer semester. Boles failed to complete a paper in an Afro-American studies class, according to Percy Baits, who chairs the academic performance comm- ittee. He said a final decision would be made this morning, and that Boles' importance to the team would not be a factor in the decision. Boles needs to pass the class in order to petition the committee to restore his eligibility, as his grade point average is below Michigan's 2.0 requirement. The committee may restore an athlete's eligibility if he/she has achieved a g.p.a. over the 1.8 required for eligibilty by the Big 10. Boles, who won the starting job in the spring, chose not to answe questions, and football coach Ba Schembechler was unavailable fo comment. Boles ...may not play MEIJER, INC.
