The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, December 13, 1988 - Page 11 USC Continued from Page 1. And of course, USC wouldn't be the Trojans without great running backs. Junior Aaron Emanuel, who is already being considered a Heisman Trophy candidate for next year, leads a quintet of tailbacks. "Despite suffering numerous injuries and sitting out all :of last season, Emanuel has averaged almost 82 yards h per game in limited duty. Moreover, he scored eight touchdowns, including a 25-yard touchdown run against UCLA. Sophomore Scott Lockwood, who started five games at tailback, is averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Lockwood is a breakaway runner who has the power and speed to burn through even the smallest of holes. ON THE OTHER SIDE of the ball stands the backbone of the Trojans' squad. Anchored by All- America safety Mark Carrier, USC has only allowed its opponents an average of 14.7 points per game. Furthermore, the Trojans have owned the trenches. Led by All-America tackle Tim Ryan, USC has allowed opposing rushers a mere 2.7 yards per carry - an amazing statistic when you consider that the Trojans played Oklahoma and Arizona, two schools that run the wishbone, and UCLA, which features great talents in its backfield. Bringing the offense and defense together is coach Larry Smith, known around USC as the miracle worker. In just two short years as the Trojan skipper, Smith has guided USC to an 18-5 record and two Rose Bowl appearances. The Trojans had a shot at the national title until losing to Notre Dame in their regular-seaon finale. SMITH OWES a lot of his success to Bo Schembechler. Smith worked as an assistant to the Michigan coach when he was at Miami (Ohio) and then moved to Ann Arbor with Schembechler when Bo took his position with the Wolverines. Unfortunately, Smith learned two bad habits from Schembechler - one is throwing a temper tantrum after a bad game. "After my first loss at Tulane I was pretty mad," Smith said. "We got killed. When the plane came back I threw my suitcase on the top of the stairs on to the ground. Then I stormed past the media and didn't say anything ... I learned that from Bo." And the second is losing in the Rose Bowl game, where Schembechler is 1-7 and Smith is 0-1. Nonetheless, USC students are confident the Trojans will be victorious. And why not? They have the best quarterback in the country, one of the strongest defenses, and as if that isn't enough they also have the ,"home" field advantage. 'M'9 Continued from Page 1 be dusted off and used. Anything to pull out the win. Imagine Michigan tailback Tony Boles taking the handoff, running across the field, throwing back across to wide receiver Greg McMurtry, who promptly flings the ball downfield to a wide-open John Kolesar. Sound confusing? Imagine playing defense against it. Here's more evidence. Schembechler has been snakebit against USC. He lost to the Trojans in 1970, 1977, and 1979. "OUR RECORD against them is great. They're probably licking their chops," Schembechler said. In 1970, on the morning of his first Rose Bowl, Schembechler had a heart attack. He didn't find out the results of the game until the next day. "That was the first sign," said Schembechler, who has a 1-7 record in Pasadena. "I should have known then that me and the Rose Bowl wouldn't get along." Then there was the phantom touchdown it 1979 that USC tailback Charles White scored in the second quarter of the Trojans' 17-10 victory. That's one play Schembechler remembers vividly. "(White) lost the ball before he crossed the goal line," Schembechler said. "It was the dumbest call I ever saw. I was watching the sports news on TV that night and they asked him if he thought he scored. He said, 'Yup.' "Then they showed the play from every angle and while they showed it, they played 'It's Impossible.' You know, 'It's impossible, tee-dee, dee, dee,' " said a singing Schembechler. IT'S USC'S time to sing the maize and blues. Defensive tackle Mark Messner will still be outraged that he did not win the Outland Award or the Lombardi Trophy. Watch out Scott Lockwood. Watch out Leroy Holt. For Peete's sake, watch out Rodney. Remember the movie "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"? Remember when Ridgemont's star player found his Trans Am mutilated and what he did to archrival Lincoln High when he thought they were responsible? That will be Messner. Besides, Michigan has to win. Otherwise, its fans won't be able to wonder what would have happened if Gillette hit the last second field goal against Notre Dame, or if Michigan hadn't blown a 30-14 lead against Miami (Fla.) in the final 5 minutes, 30 seconds, or if Tracy Williams hadn't fumbled on the one-yard line with a minute left against Iowa in the 17-17tie.
