The Michigan Daily - Monday, December 12, 1988 - Page 11 Women settle for consolation win BY LORY KNAPP The Michigan women's basketball team failed to play up to its potential, but was still able to salvage a third-place finish this weekend at the Lady Blazer Classic. The team rebounded from what coach Bud VanDeWege saw "as a total breakdown in every area" during a 58-57 loss to Tulane in the tournament opener to defeat Austin Peay, 77-57, in the consolation game. Michigan's impressive play against Austin Peay was absent in the one-point loss to Tulane. "We didn't apply pressure offensively or defensively, and we didn't rebound," VanDeWege said. The players were also disappointed with their performance. "We went there with the intention of winning the championship," Wolverine forward Tanya Powell said. "We didn't play up to our potential, and we wanted to avoid that this year." Michigan guard Carol Szczechowski's play earned her a spot on the all-tournament team. She had a team-leading 15 points and seven assists against Tulane and scored 14 against Austin Peav. Tempie Brown and Leslie Spicer also scored 14 to seal the Michigan victory over the Governors. Spicer started in place of forward Lorea Feldman, who did not make the road trip in order to study for final exams. Spicer responded by averaging seven rebounds in the tournament and picking up the scoring slack. Spicer's efforts were not enough in the Tulane game, however. After trailing 54-45 with five minutes to play, Michigan rallied back to tie the game at 57-57 with 30 seconds left. But Brown fouled Tulane's Cheryl True with two seconds left, and True hit one of two free throws to seal the victory. Despite not winning the tournament, VanDeWege viewed the experience positively. "It was nice to bounce back and play well against Austin Peay. It will give us good morale. going into our game with Auburn," he said. "He wasn't moving, and (referee Steve) Piotrowski wasn't going to call it, so I tried to move him out of there," Keough said. "He had me so far back in my net and he was able to flip the rebound in. It should have been a whistle." The Wolverines were able to pull within 3-2 early in the third period, but the Spartans scored the next two goals to assure their 17th consecutive victory. FRIDAY NIGHT, in front of a sell-out crowd of 8,322, Michigan threatened Muzzatti repeatedly, but he met all 20 challenges the Wolverines put forth, holding Michigan scoreless. Michigan goalie Warren Sharples saved 25 of 28 Michigan State shots on goal, including several breakaway shots, but the three that slipped through made the difference, 3-0. "One of our team goals is to hold the opponent to no more than three goals, so defensively we did a good job," Sharples said. "But it wasn't enough." "We didn't get the bounces," Berenson said after the game. "We had a lot of 'just about' goals, ROBIN LOZNAK/Doily . and Michigan State's Brad in front of the Michigan State but we just couldn't put the puck in the net. You only get a few chances; you just have to make them count." The chances were there. Michigan center Todd Brost hit the post squarely on a shot from in front of the net. Forward Denny Felsner hit a post and also had a one-on-zero breakaway stymied by Muzzatti. "Michigan came out with tremendous emotion, but we had a great team effort," Mason said. "Our special teams were great, (Muzzatti) had a big game in the net, Kip Miller had a strong game. We've got some depth on this team." Berenson was generally pleased with his team"s performance both nights. "We were capable of winning a game this weekend," he said. "We were right in the game for about the first half (Sunday). There was a lot of close checking and nobody could get going. That's the way we want it." Mason said: "There were lots of times that we didn't have control. I was never worried about losing the game, but there were times that Michigan had us on the ropes. They had a lot of great chances and we had to hope to get a save or hope they missed." CHICAGO (AP) - Former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh started for the second straight game and led the Chicago Bears to a 13-12 victory over the visiting Detroit Lions on Sunday. Kevin Butler kicked a 32-yarder with four seconds left to win the game. The victory, coupled with Minnesota's 18-6 loss to Green Bay, clinched the Bears' fifth straight NFC Central title. Chicago and Minnesota meet next Monday night in Minnesota in a game that would have been a title showdown had the Vikings won Sunday. Harbaugh redeemed himself after a disappointing NFL debut in a 23-3 loss to the Rams last Monday night. Against the Lions, he completed 18 of 26 passes for 174 yards and led the team in rushing with 36 yards and a touchdown. "Last week I tried to make the big play too much," Harbaugh said. "This time I just took each play at a time." With Chicago behind, 12-10, Harbaugh used a 17-yard pass to Dennis McKinnon and an 11-yard pass to James Thornton to help move the Bears from their own 30 inside the Detroit 15 to set up Butler's second field goal of the game. Detroit had moved 90 yards on the previous drive. Garry James dived over from the one-yard line to put Detroit ahead, 12-10, but Chicago's Al Harris blocked the extra-point attempt by Ed Murray, which turned out to be Chicago's margin of victory. Harbaugh ran four yards up the middle on a quarterback draw for~a touchdown with 4:05 left in the third quarter to put Chicago up, 10-6. During the 74-yard scoring drive, Harbaugh ran 19 yards to midfield and passed 22 yards to McKinnon to move Chicago to the Detroit 10. In other games Sunday: PACKERS 18, VIKINGS 6.
