No amount of salt and lemon could help this Tequila' By Tony Silber Just when you thought 1988 would be one of the all-time worst years for motion pictures, along comes a film with class and flair, sex appeal and style. It's called Tequila Sunrise, a new picture by Robert Towne, one of the most talented writers in Hollywood, and it features Mel Gibson, Kurt Rus- sell, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Raul Julia. With a director-writer of this caliber and a hot cast, things look sunny for Sunrise. Add some sharp photography and an ethereal score by Dave Grusin, and this picture's got some major potential. But, re- grettably, the film gets buried under its own arrogance and glossy tex- ture and drags the audience along for an "action-thriller" devoid of action and thrills. The plot of the film - simply put - involves a retired drug dealer (Gibson) who drives a forklift by day and a Porsche by night, an un- enthused cop (Russell) who looks like Lakers' coach Pat Riley, and a posh restaurant hostess (Pfeiffer) who always eats on the job. With characters like these, who needs a story? Predictably, these desperados enter into a love triangle, and Gib- son ponders whether or not to -get back intodealing cocaine. Mean- while Russell ponders whether or not to bust Gibson, his high- school-chum-turned-drug-dealer. And throughout all this, Pfeiffer ponders which of them to sleep with. And you thought sophistica- tion was a thing of the past in cin- ema. Robert Towne is responsible for this mess and what a tragedy, con- sidering this is the guy who wrote Chinatown andFrantic. He worked with his good friend, Roman Polanski, on those projects but too bad old Roman was nowhere to be found in the credits of Tequila Sun- rise. It's apparent that Towne has tried to copy Polanski's style in this film, bombarding us with Art Deco sets and a quick script and wrapping them around a complex story with twists and turns at every scene change. . But Tequila Sunrise's story doesn't work because the one thing necessary to make everything fit together doesn't happen. Everything depends on the audience finding sympathy in these unappealing characters, especially in Gibson. But it's a tall order to ask the audi- ence to rally behind a coke pusher, even if he is a really nice guy. So with no emotional commitment or attachment to these characters, it's no wonder we don't care who lives or dies when Gibson and Russell pull guns on each other at the end. Raul Julia (Kiss of the Spider Woman) is a pleasant exception, colorfully portraying the sinister drug kingpin with a zany flair. But Julia does not offset the malaised contribution of the indecisive main characters. Don't get me wrong -Tequila Sunrise isn't god-awful, it's just not good. It tries too hard to be flashy and mysterious, concerned more with lighting and makeup than with content. But all of these elements have to work together if the film is going to achieve its goal. Towne uses some interesting See TEQUILA, Page 7 Classes are over, finals are fin- ished, you're visiting your parents, and you're bored stiff. So you go see a movie. Good idea. And as winter break nears, so does next year, and thus a bunch of new films are released, so they can be nomi- nated for this year's Oscars. Some of these movies may be nominated, some may not, and some probably shouldn't have been made at all. Itis up to you to decide what does well at the "Box Office," and to the Academy to decide the nominations. So why am I here? To give you a briefing of what to expect as you head out on a cold winter night tospend your last few dollars left over from holiday shop- ping. Starting on Dec. 14, the day after classes end, is a film appropriately named in honor of finals time - it's titled I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Fortunately it has nothing to do with exams, but is a comedy- spoof of the "blaxploitation" films of the '70s. It was written, directed by and stars Keenan Ivory Wayans, who had a role in last year's Hol- lywood Shuffle - Robert Townsend's comic look at the plight of Black actors. If Sucka comes close to the poignant parody of Shuffle, it'll provide both laughs and a little insight into the stereo- typing Blacks face in the media and out of the media as well. Also opening on Dec. 14 is an- other film that may refer to your profs if your finals or grades were t1, -8 Direc Musi Dec Sat.
