0 Page 10-- The Michigan Daily- Friday, December 9, 1988 'Dreams really can come true' I Twins is one of a kind BY CHERIE CURRY REMEMBER when Jiminy Cricket sang the timeless tune, "When You Wish Upon A Star" to Pinocchio? Remember when he promised him that dreams do come true? It's probably just a childhood memory now, but wouldn't it be great to be a part of Pinocchio's magical world just one more time - to recollect the woodcutter named Gepetto who longs for a real live son, and whose dream is realized when his wooden puppet, Pinocchio, comes to life, then sets off to discover a world of fantasy of adventure? Well, now you can, when this whimsical fairy tale goes into its first performance tonight. The presentation of Pinocchio is a cooperative venture of three theater groups utilizing the best of their talents and creativity but don't expect them to put on a performance emulating the classic cartoon production. Their presentation will incorporate many styles of theater. The characters of Fox and Cat will be created using the famous half masks of the Com- media dell' arte tradition. Many of the scenes will exist surrealistically, as when Pinocchio tries to find Gepetto in the monster and as he walks through the enchanted forest of living water sprites. It promises to be visual and aural delight for audiences of all ages. Much of the fun and realism of should come from audience participation. Productions continue on, but sometimes memories don't. Come enjoy this age-old story about truth, fairies, and dreams before you find yourself completely forgetting that there ever was a wonderful wooden puppet named Pinocchio. Community High School Fine Arts Repertory Company (FARCO), Ann Arbor Civic Theatre, and Young People's Theatre proudly present. PINOCCHIO. Production dates are Dec. 9,10,11, 16,17, and 18. BY MARK SHAIMAN AND TONY SILBER If you thought that Felix and Oscar were an odd couple, wait til you see Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito as they light up the holiday screens in Twins, a hilarious, completely entertaining new comedy by Ivan Reitman (Stripes, Ghostbusters). Separated at birth, Julius (Schwarzenegger) and Vincent (DeVito) are reunited for a rollicking ride of laughs and surprises as they seek out their long-lost mother. Julius is the naive, virtuous, innocent big lug who comes to the big city to find the twin brother he never knew: slimy, despicable, ill-reputed Vincent who has a family of large bruisers looking for him. Julius was brought up in a South Pacific paradise where he learned goodness. Vincent was brought up in an orphandge where he stole the Christmas fund and chased after his Biology teacher who happend to be a nun. It's no wonder that laughs galore are in store as Vincent teaches the inexperienced Julius the ways of city life. Twins has a slew of one-liners that capture the comical mind of Ivan Reitman and the whole film flows beautifully, especially for the first hour as the scenes shift from Julius to Vincent and back, each encountering another run-in with slapstick calamity. At one point, Julius, walking through Hollywood, comes to a Sylvester Stallone-Rambo III billboard, flexes his muscles, and gives an unforgettable expres- sion of smugness that must be seen to be appreciated. Twins is a film that plays heavily on the visual, especially because of the obvious physical differences between the two characters. Danny DeVito (Ruthless People) is his usual charming self, bringing a dash of dirt and obnoxious- ness to a role perfectly suited to his style. As for The Terminator, the man who can't act or be understood, Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a brilliant turnaround, turning in a glittering perfomance in his first comedy role. Rounding out the cast are Kelly Preston (Spellbinder) and Chloe Webb (Sid & Nancy) who play the sisters who romance the crazy twins. In between the numerous laughs in Twins were some minor problems. The serious scenes are gener- ally bland and offset the impact of the excellent com- edy. Some aspects of the story are not totally be- lievable and are open-ended. But don't analyze Twins 'til it's blue; it's a film to be enjoyed, not thought about. Twins is a great comedy, one of the best this year, and the exhuberence and zeal which Schwarz- enegger and DeVito bring to the film carry it all the way. It asks nothing of the audience and gives an abundance of memorable comedy in these two terrific perfomances. And believe it or not, it's rated PG. Who ever said innocent comedies died with The Muppet Movie? TWINS opens today at Showcase and State Cinemas. I Notice the family resem- blance? Nobody else does either, but at least for the purposes of Twins, D a n n y DeVito and Arnold Schwarz- enegger are brothers. Honest. Richards explores personal, music options to INSTANT CASH! Experimenting with a "multi-tracked vocal loop" - a recording device that allows Richards to record her voice on stage, she cre- ates "voice scapes" - layerings of six or so harmonies over one another. A performer on the front line of this new concept in live per- formance, Richards uses this device to create music rich in texture and scope.
