'U' hopes to admit more Detroit students through program

The University is teaming up
with Wayne County Community
College's east campus and Detroit
high schools in a new program to
open doors to higher education for

minority students.
According to a statement released
yesterday, the program assures
graduates of the WCCC honors pro-
gram with a minimum 3.0 GPA a
place in the LSA junior class. The

agreement also guarantees admission
in Wayne's honors program to De-
troit public high school students who
graduate with a grade point average of
at least 2.8 and a counselor's recom-

WCCC contacted the University
about a year ago, and "the program
grew out of those conversations,"
Holmes said. The program was en-
acted this fall, and now has about 30
participants at WCCC, about a third
of whom have visited the Univer-
sity's campus already.
Prior to the program, "admissions
visits from WCCC were at about one
or two a year," Holmes said.
The students are encouraged to

take summer classes at the Univer-
sity and are offered "financial advis-
ing," Holmes said, although he said
no specific scholarships have been
created for the program.
Holmes said he was excited about
the "potential for attracting people of
color from WCCC and from other
colleges and universities as well. We
wanted to start at one campus and
spread to other campuses at WCCC."
If this program is successful, the
University will create similar part-
nerships with other colleges, he said.
Holmes said he did not know of a
similar program state-wide or
nationally.

Hogarth Management controls the
Kresge Building and its general
manager, Roger Hewitt, explained

that the lower part of the building
had remained vacant for over a year
because its former occupant, K-Mart,
had not managed to unload its lease
after deciding to shut down. The
lease expired in April.
Hewitt explained that Hogarth
Management's "intention from the
beginning was to do a lease for the
entire building" and that it had been
always understood that the former
upstairs leases probably would not
be renewed.
