BY ADAM SCHRAGER
Charlie Coles isn't much of a
Michigan basketball fan.
"Talent-wise, Michigan is one of
the best teams I've seen in my life,"
said Coles, the Central Michigan
coach. "They have five first-round
choices with three or four possible
lottery picks. It is one of the greatest
assemblages of talent ever. Despite
all that, we're looking forward to
playing the game."
While Coles may be a bit
skeptical about staining the
Chippewas' near-perfect 3-1 record,
Michigan head coach Bill Frieder
sees the situation somewhat
differently.
"We're looking forward to
playing the state schools," said
Frieder, whose team boasts a 6-0
record. "They are always a good test
for us."
THE CHIPPEWAS, who
have not beaten Michigan since
1951, probably had their best chance
last season, when they boasted 1988
Olympian and first-round draft choice
Dan Majerle, who averaged over 20
points and ten rebounds per game.
This season, while the proverbial
cupboard is not bare, Central's
canned goods are not in abundance.
The leading scorer is Dan's brother

Jeff, a 6-8 sophomore, averaging

closely is 6-5 senior forward Ed
Wilcox, who has averaged just over
14 points per game, in the
Chippewas' victories over the
University of Detroit, Chicago
State, and Wright State.
Leading the way for the
Wolverines has been Loy Vaught,
converted sixth-man and fan favorite.
For the season, Vaught has tallied
13.3 points and eight rebounds,
while being vociferously cheered by
the normally catatonic Crisler Arena
crowd.
"I didn't understand it," Vaught
said after last Friday's eruption when
he went to the bench against
Grambling State. "I owe my
performance to the crowd. They got
me excited."
