The Michigan Doily - Wednesday, December 7, 1988- Page 5 Survey ranks University B-School sixth in nation BY ALEX GORDON The latest rankings are in: the Wolverine basketball team is No. 2, the football team is holding steady at No. 11, and the School of Business Administration's MBA program moved up to No. 6. The cover story of the Nov. 28 issue of Business Week magazine ranked the nation's top business schools, putting Northwestern first, followed by Harvard, Dartmouth, Pennsylvania's Wharton, and Cor- nell. The results were based on two extensive surveys, one of 1988 graduates from top-rated business schools and the other of major cor- porate recruiters. Although ranked sixth overall, Michigan's minority enrollment figures topped the list. Twenty-five percent of the entering MBA stu- dents at Michigan are minorities. Business School Dean Gilbert Whitaker said the large percentage was the result of an eight- or nine- year commitment to increasing mi- nority enrollment. "We worked hard to get there," said Whitaker. "I'm glad to see it recognized." The sixth-place ranking was a combination of a fifth-place corpo- rate ranking and a 12th-place gradu- ate ranking. About 21 percent of Michigan's 1988 MBA graduates re- sponded to the survey. Graduates were asked to respond to 35 questions, ranging from "Assess the worth in terms of time and money of your MBA" to "What percentage of your classmates would you want for friends." Columbia University received the poorest score in the latter question. In addition, the survey provided a section for comments. Several Michigan graduates used the section to criticize the school's Executive Education program. "The Executive program always takes the best people and dilutes the quality of the MBA program," one graduate wrote. Whitaker disagreed, saying the executive program provides money for improvements and strengthens teaching because "faculty get more contact with bright practitioners." One student joked his MBA pro- vided him "20 Bs for 50 Gs." John Byrne, Business Week management editor and the article's author, said this survey was more valuable than past ones. 0Ufoo0 of -OaCK iw'- acci &etG e Jno a z r at &$a4/ a 4614/* Zenith's battery powered SuperSport.
