The rookie can also pitch and may be called upon to breathe some new life into a tired Michigan pitching staff today against Ferris State. Hurlers must pitch in aga By RICHARD EISEN The Michigan baseball pitching staff is one exhausted bunch. In last weekend's four games against Minnesota, of which the Wolverines won three, Michigan coach Bud Middaugh used seven different pitchers, using a variety of them twice. This means that Michigan is short pitchers going into today's game against Ferris State. "I can't really do anything about (the shortage)," said Middaugh. "We're probably going to have to throw some people who you haven't seen yet." HENCE, Middaugh will pick from a few pitchers whose main job is usually to mop up in the late innings or to hose down the field in between games of a doubleheader. With these hurlers, one never knows whether the game will be under control or will end up a carnival. Therefore, in the carnival spirit, Bud will spin the pitcher wheel and come up with a decision of whom to pitch. Round and round she goes... And the wheel stops on sophomore pitcher John Locker, whom Michigan fans have seen before. Locker, who started one game and relieved in another, is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA. MIDDAUGH might spin the wheel again, and this time it could stop on another sophomore pitcher, Rick Leonard. Leonard has yet to pitch in a game this year and was 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA last year. "You also could possibly see Kirt Ojala," said ringmaster Middaugh. "Maybe you might see (Greg) Haeger throw." The wheel could yield the rookie Ojala his first collegiate start. Ojala, a graduate from Portage Central, had two no-hitters in high school along with a streak of 15.7 innings without allowing a hit. Middaugh could win a stuffed Wolverine if his wheel stops on the rookie first baseman Haeger. First baseman? Haeger, who is knocking the cover off the ball with a .330 average 2 HR and inst Bulldogs 22 RBI, can also throw the cover off the ball. In his senior year of high school, he had a 9-4 record and a clean 2.00 ERA. ALL THIS will happen under the Big Top called Ray Fisher Stadium today at 2 p.m. against a Division II school, the Ferris State Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, managed by fifth-year coach Judd Folske, are 9-15-1 so far and lead the Great Lakes Conference with a 3-1 record. The Bulldogs came to Ann Arbor last year and split a pair with the Wolverines, winning the nightcap, 7-2. The Bulldogs strongman is senior catcher John Faccio, who leads Ferris State in most offensive categories including average (.342), home runs (four) and runs batted in (19). The Bulldogs pitching situation is just as muddled as Michigan's, with most of the pitchers making the trip to Ann Arbor from Big Rapids. But one set Bulldog pitching position is today's first starter, rookie Brian Williams. Williams is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA so far this year. In Saturday's game, Michigan pounded the Boilermakers, 10-4. At- tackers Mike Kennedy and Mike Carr scored three goals each in the win. "The score doesn't reflect it, but we had a bit of a struggle with Purdue this year," noted Michigan coach Bob DiGiovanni. "They're quite im- proved." Sunday afternoon, the Wolverines grounded, Toledo, 8-2. Backups Dave Fitzpatrick and Andy Billelo provided strong goaltending, and six different players notched goals. "Beyond the victories, the weekend games helped us practice some new strategies to use against Michigan State," remarked Bob Digiovanni. Michigan faces the Spartans Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Tartan Turf. Starting goalie and captain Rob Digiovanni assessed: "It's going to come down to fundamentals. Being a varsity squad, skill-wise they're go- ing to be a little bit stronger. Every- one on the Michigan team is really going to have to pull his own weight to make it a close contest." ..
