The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, April 12, 1988- Page 7 POLICE NOTES Research Group exposes weapons research projects at 'U' Continued from Page 3 "All of the research that we have picked out is very likely to be used to kill or maim humans." "I think people who tried to stop slavery thought it was an unrealistic goal, but they did it anyway because they knew slavery was wrong," Hanna-Davies said. CAWR said other projects were also weapons-related, including a study on chemical blistering by University Biological Chemistry Prof. Isadore Bernstein. Bernstein has denied that his project deals with research into chemical warfare. C A W R also cited a project by Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Prof. Fawwaz Ulaby which deals with "enhancing the detection of targetsunder vegetation cover." According to the documents re- leased by the coalition, Ulaby's re- search "could have application in counter-revolutionary warfare in Third World jungles." Ulaby denied that his project has a weapons application, saying his research deals with using radar to de- termine the rate at which a tree evaporates water. Ulaby said that any object of radar is scientifically referred to as a tar- get, and in the case of his particular project, the targets involved are trees. He said the Department of De- fense funds his project because it is "fundamental research." Ulaby said the coalition is trying to evaluate his research through looking only at its title. "They would be mistaken to start making statements that are... fictional," he said. "I support their group, and for them to go out and criticize me and my projects is totally stupid," Ulaby said. Burn Memory of flight survivor spurs $500 donation Continued from Page 3 Saturday. The students decided to di- vide the donation into funds for pre- vention and awareness, research, and endowment. Prasad said he was very pleased with the contribution. "Although burn injuries are as old as civiliza- tion, it is unfortunately an infant speciality. Burn patients have tradi- tionally been treated like leprosy or AIDS victims, shoved in a corner and not paid attention to," he said. He emphasized the need for more research funding. "The only way we can treat people is by moving skin and applying a graft. Patients need new artificial skin development or culturing new skin. Work needs to be done to reduce mortality figures." Operating costs at the burn center - staffed by a team of 73 physi- cians, plastic surgeons, anesthesiol- ogists, nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, and other health care providers - run about $6.6 million per year. The center was consolidated and rebuilt in 1986 at a cost of $10 million. The burn center treats about 200 victims a year - with an average of 18 patients in the ward at all times. Since its founding in 1959, more than 8,00 patients have undergone treatment, Prasad said. About two million people are burned each year, some 8,111 fa- tally. Burns are the second most common cause of accidental death, and more than half of such burns in- volve children, Prasad said. Auto thefts Ann Arbor police are investigat- ing three auto thefts that occurred over the weekend, said Sgt. Jan Suomala. The three thefts were lo- cated in the 500 block of S. State, the 600 block of Oxford, and the 300 block of Thompson. Break-in Police are also investigating a break-in reported in Mary Markley residence hall on April 1. A beeper worth $200 was stolen from the maintenance office, Suomala said. Armed robbery A 24 year old Domino's Pizza delivery person was threatened with a gun in the 1600 block of Prospect on Saturday night, Suomala said. When the driver arrived to deliver the pizza, the suspect indicated he had a gun in his pocket and the driver dropped the pizza and ran to his car, Suomala said. Robbery A male suspect told police he was assaulted by four suspects in the Liberty Plaza park, located in the 500 block of S. Division, on Sunday night. The suspects assaulted the man and took his portable stereo. Suomala said the victim was taken to the University hospital for treatment of injuries. A second roblery was reported on Sunday in the 600 block of E. William. Suomala said a 31-year-old male was assaulted by two suspects who stole a small amount of cash from him. Arson A suspect set fire to a garage and two vehicles in the 3100 block of Macomb Sunday evening, Suomala said. The incident is under police investigation. -Melissa Ramsdell HELP WANTED HELP WANTED HELP WANTED ****** I YP'ISTS****** Very flexible day or evening hours. 80 wpm. q 668-8898. /fSUMMER POSITIONS/A/bWith interna- tionally known company on West Coast./fCall 487-8216 for details./a AAA STUDENT PAINTERS OUTDOOR SUMMER JOBS Painters and foreman needed in the following areas: Ann Arbor-Call IHeath at 764-4670, Troy-Call Matt at 747-7595.
