The Wolverines passed with flying col- ors as they beat the Golden Gophers three out of four times. "It was a typical conference in weekend play weekend," said Michigan coach Bud Middaugh. "All the games were ex- tremely close. I'm exhausted." Michigan cannot truly gauge themselves on this weekend's series because they were playing a rusty team. Minnesota just began its season last weekend. "IT'S STILL very early on in the season," said Middaugh. "All this weekend was, was just jockey- ing for position in the playoffs." Michigan did a lot of jockeying indeed, as it beat Minnesota in a photo finish in Saturday's first game, scoring four times in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Mike Ig- nasiak, now 6-0, picked up the win giving up one run and striking out six in five innings of work. Phil Price broke the tie and handed Ig- nasiak the win with a two-run dou- ble. Bill St. Peter iced the affair with a two-run home run. Ignasiak, who pitched five great innings, lost it in the sixth, when he walked three batters. Middaugh called for Ross Powell, who cleaned up the mess by striking out Jeff Goergen and getting Dan Wilson to hit into a 1-6-3 double play. Chris Lutz finished the game and got the save. In the second game another starting pitcher, Jim Abbott, lost his control late in the game. ABBOTT WAS stumbling along until the fifth, when, with a four-run lead, he gave up two dou- bles and a home run. Again, Mid- daugh reached into his bullpen and Dave Peralta put out the fire. Ross Grimes finished up matters to earn his second save of the season. Sunday's opener was another tight race as Michigan crossed the wire to win the game, 7-6 in eight innings. Michigan started Satur- day's saving grace Lutz, but he couldn't deliver this time, yielding a home run to the first batter of the game, Joe Bruett. Middaugh then used the other Saturday ace Ross Grimes and Grimes, like Lutz, threw oil on the fire, giving up three runs in two innings. Michigan came back to win it, handing Peralta a well de- served win. In Sunday's nightcap, Michigan newcomer Jeff Tanderys took the 9- 4 loss. Price ... game winning RBI to0 w Netters blast Big Ten rivals Z:1[6 By STEVEN GINNS Two up and two down. Michigan men's tennis began defense of its Big Ten title with two easy victories last weekend. They volleyed past Purdue on Saturday, 8-1, and they coasted past Illinois on Sunday, 9-0. The two victories increased the Wolverines consecutive Big Ten victories to 20. The last time they lost within the conference was in 1986, when they were beaten by Northwestern, 5-4. THE WOLVERINES came out a little nervous against Purdue since it was their first Big Ten match. The Boilermakers made the most of that by winning a match, and extending the Wolverines to three sets in three matches before losing.
