0 Page 8-The Michigan Daily-Monday, April 11, 1988 Academy Continued from Page 7 tions. So here goes: Best Film: Personally, I think My Life As A Dog was the tops, but it wasn't even nominated. So I give this one to the lush epic The Last Emperor because the Academy seems to like grandiose bio films. Just look at Gandhi and Amadeus. Best Director: In the last 35 years, only three times has the director of the Best Film not won this Oscar, so why go against such odds? Bertolucci deserves it anyway. Best Actor: I'm hoping the Academy will surprise itself and give the nod to Robin Williams, who displayed true talent. But the competition is tough with Hurt and Nicholson who are always in the running. Best Female Actor: From the day Broadcast News arrived, everyone has been praising Holly Hunter's performance. She won't go home empty-handed. Best Supporting Actor: Albert Brooks had as much screen time as William Hurt and at least as impor- tant a role in Broadcast News, yet he was nominated in this category. But their studio probably lobbied for this so that both men can win Oscars instead of splitting the vote in one category. Forgetting politics, Albert Brooks gave the best performance of any male star this year. Best Supporting Female Actor: The favorite seems to be Olympia Dukakis of Moonstruck who stole the show as Cher's mother. And somewhere each year the Academy gives an Oscar to an established older actor; maybe Dukakis's time has come. Those are the major awards and my predictions. Who the real win- ners are we'll find out starting at 9 p.m. tonight. Whether just a popu- larity contest or actually praise from one's peers, the glamour and pres- tige that accompanies one of those little statues appeals to every-one, filmmaker and film-goer alike. Rua aw Ube CDONjed The Grateful Dead return with old, new following By Brian Jarvinen One of the land's most popular college bands arrive at Joe Louis Arena tonight in a rare Michigan appearance. R.E.M.? INXS? U2? No, this band doesn't use silly initials for its name - no one had thought of that when these guys got together. Yes, tonight those old San Francisco space cadets the Grateful Dead will get it up for another show on their spring tour. The Dead recently resurrected a sputtering career with the success of last year's top ten LP, In The Dark. This new found popularity (which included, for better or worse, an appearance in the Top 40 with the song "Touch of Grey") has brought many new fans into the devoted legion of Deadheads. This has caused some tension among long time Dead fans who resent hearing "A lot of poor men / makin' five dollar bill" coming out of a CD player in a Fiero. This type of Dead fan seems to miss the point of the Dead's message. In defense of the new fans, however, one must realize that they were not exposed to the band until "Touch of Grey." Many of the new converts latch onto the Dead because they represent the '60s, the current cool decade to pretend to live in. Unfortunately, the children of the materialistic '80s don't pick up any of the '60s values from the experience. The Dead always have and always will attract criticism and jeers from people who don't understand them. Critics bitch about lame tunes and the band's perpetual touring that seems to be designed to milk the Deadheads for as much money as possible. Indeed, following the band can get expensive for the Deadheads, but the Dead are on the road due to tremendous fan demand, not because their record company decided it was the right time to send the boys out. The Dead will continue to ripple along on their train in an unbroken chain; they might have a touch of grey, but a box of rain won't keep them from truckin'around to smell the sweet sugar magnolias. As a wiser man than me once said, "space is for deadheads not warheads." You can be sure the space around Joe Louis will be humming when Casey Jones careens into town tonight. THE GRATEFUL DEAD play at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit tonight., 6 6 TUESDAY LUNCH FORUM at the INTERNATIONAL CENTER - 603 E. MADISON April12 at 12 noon: "A Report from the Middle East" Speaker: Rev.
