ARTS The Michigan Daily Monday, April 11, 1988 Pago y Paev The Oscar: Symbol of excellence or popularity? By Mark Shaiman "May I have the envelope, please." A drumroll sounds. "And the winner is ..." Once again the Oscars are upon us, the night when last year's achievements in motion pictures are recognized - or at least some of them. In a year when neither My Life As A Dog nor Jean De Florette is nominated as best film, foreign or otherwise, something is amiss. But the nominations are long past, so I'll forego my grudges against the Academy, because tonight is Holly- wood's biggest outing. How big? Last year's extrava- ganza cost $4.34 million to put on and the revenues were $7.71 million. You can be sure that with this kind of profit margin, the Academy will once again go for broke. Obviously, movies are a big- money business, but the Oscar rec- ognizes artistic merit. Well, at least that is the intention. What really goes on is slightly different. First of all, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences is divided into 13 branches, from directors to editors to actors. People from each group vote for other people in their own cate- gory. This is where the nominations come from, which seems perfectly legitimate. For the winners, the members of the Academy get to vote in all the Hunter ... won't go home empty-handed HELP WANTED /fSUMMER POSITIONS/A/bWith intema- tionally known company on West Coast.%fCall 487-8216 for details./a AAA STUDENT PAINTERS OUTDOOR SUMMER JOBS Painters and foreman needed in the following areas: Ann Arbor-Call Heath at 764-4670, Troy-Call Matt at 747-7595. This year there are a total of 39 individual films nominated for the various awards. But are we really supposed to believe that every one of those 4,485 voters saw every one of these films? What really influences the voters, if not the movies themselves, is ad- vertising. Full page ads in trade magazines and Hollywood billboards promote Michael Douglas as Best Actor or Broadcast News as best film. And again it all comes back to money. An Oscar for best film can bring in an extra $10 million in box-office receipts, in addition to boosting the income from cable and video rights. So who is this almighty Oscar guy, anyway?
