In the Victorian era, three schoolgirls disappear on a picnic and only one returns but with no memory of what happened. TAMPOPO (Juzo Itami, 1987) Michigan Theater 7 p.m. Billed as the "first n o o d l e western" this film spoofs everything from spaghetti westerns to karate films to sex, and is funny every bit of the way. STOP MAKING SENSE (Jonathan Demme, 1984) Michigan Theater 9:20 This concert film of the Talking Heads "Talking in Tongues" tour is more than just a movie, it's a recreation because there is always dancing in the aisles. while. Filmed secretly at the end of WWII this is the story of one woman and the men who love her in a time one hundred years earlier, Paris of the 1840's. THE REVOLT OF JOB (Imre Gyongossy, 1983) MLB 4 9:30 Nominated for best foreign film in 1983, this is the tale of a Jewish farmer in Hungary who adopts a Christian orphan in hopes that the boy will continue his own tradition. ALTERED STATES (Ken Russell, 1980) Nat Sci 7:00 & 9:00 Combine actor William Hurt, director Ken Russell, and author Paddy Chayefsky, and you get a film filled with isolation tanks, the missing link, and great special effects. yet he is able to beautifully capture the Indian landscape while telling the story of three young teenage girls growing up along the Ganges river. THE SOUTHERNER (Jean Renoir, 1945) MLB 4 8:45 Even though Renoir is a Frenchman, he has been able to create a fine piece of americana with an appropriately perfect ending. REPENTANCE (Tengiz Abuladze, 1984) Michigan Theater 5:00 From the Soviet Union comes this allegory about Stalin's dictator- ship that also comments upon contemporary Russian society. The plot is reminiscent of Hitchcock's The Trouble With 1/arry in which a dead body keeps disappearing. BARRY LYNDON (Stanley Kubrick, 1976) Michigan Theater 7:45 Famous for it's lighting and for being a "coffee-table book" film, this adaptation of the Thackeray novel is a sight to see.
