ARTS The Michigan Daily Friday, April 8, 1988 Page 7 Wainwright delivers own brand of one-man show By Mark Swartz Who is Loudon Wainwright III? If you look him up in The New Rolling Stone Record Guide, it'll say, "Chaplin through eyes of Artaud, filtered through Dylan." Melody Maker magazine once tagged him, "a Tom Waits for those who prefer beer and Woody Guthrie to liquor and Charles Bukowski." Understand now? Neither does Wainwright. "Those are exciting and interesting people," he says. "I'm flattered that they dropped such heavy names. But then that's their job, I guess." If the above music-critic spaghetti makes it sound like Wainwright's songs are wizardly concoctions based on intricately formulated methods, they've been misleading, His own assessment of his job is really the most accurate: "I'm just writing songs the way I write songs and singing songs the way I sing songs." The way Wainwright writes songs and the way he sings them have remained pretty much unchanged in the 18 years since his debut record. He writes songs about, "Anything that interests me, bothers me, amuses me, obsesses me ... " His compositions range from languishing laments about his divorce to mundane musings about, for example, a "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road." "Dead Skunk" has been Wainwright's one and only Billboard hit. Written in 15 minutes in 1972, it is still the song by which he is remembered. "It's kind of cool to be known for a song about a squashed skunk," he explains with conviction. He promises that "Dead Skunk" is not, as one fan hypothesized, an allegory about former president Richard Nixon. Broadway musical writers of the 1940s were an early influence on Loudon Wainwright's songwriting style. He first encountered the likes of Rogers and Hammerstein and "the great, great songwriter," Frank Loesser, in his parent's record collection in North Carolina (his father, Loudon Wainwriglit II, is a Life magazine journalist). In the '60s, he was brought un- der the sway of folk singers like Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Bob Dylan. This interest was modified and con- torted by the Beatles and the Stones, and the result is Loudon Wainwright III. His songs are, in his estimation, "designed to be played in front of people. He says that he writes with a song's performance in mind. The performances are characterized by some pretty bizarre behavior. A lot of "lifting up your leg and sticking out your tongue," as he sings on his most recent album, More Love Songs. His one-man acoustic delivery is, suffice it to say, highly original and not to be missed. LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III will perform two shows tonight at the Ark (637 1/2 South Main). Showtimes are 7:30 and 10 p.m and tickets are $10.50.
