Page 10-The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, April 6, 1988 Tartars stake M' C pener; win second By MICHAEL SALINSKY Steve Savage single-handedly ended Michigan's 18-game winning streak, pitching Wayne State to a 2- 0 victory over the Wolverines in the second game of yesterday's double- header at Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan embarrassed the Tartars in the first game, 18-1, behind rookie Jeff Tanderys' three-hit com- plete game. Third baseman Steve Finken led the onslaught with three runs scored on three-for-three hitting. Finken, who broke the Michigan all-time stolen base record during Michigan's four game sweep of Northwestern Sunday and Monday, extended that record with two more swipes yesterday. 12 different Wolverines crossed the plate in the laugher. IN THE NIGHTCAP, it was Michigan that was embarrassed - embarrassed, as a top 20 team, to lose to the unknown Tartars and embarrassed to be shutout on only five hits by Savage, who who first pitched collegiately with Michigan and was virtually discarded a few years ago. "He just didn't pitch well here," said Michigan head coach Bud Mid- daugh. "I gave him a release to go somewhere else and get some work...it's worked out well for him." Savage was solid but unspectacu- lar, striking out just one and not re- tiring the side in order until the sev- enth. He had a little help from Lady Luck and the Wolverines in the late innings. In the fourth, Mike Gillette grounded into a 6-4-3 double play after the first two batters had reached base. In the fifth, it was newcomer Greg Haeger's turn. This time, it was a 4-6-3 double killing with two Wolverines on that ended the inning . In the sixth, Bill St.. Peter reached on an error to lead off the inning but the junior third baseman was caught trying to steal third with only one out. "He was stealing on his own," said Middaugh who bemoaned his team's lost opportunities. WAYNE STATE scored the only run they would need in the first inning. Leadoff hitter, Kevin Diaz, singled, stole second and scored on second baseman Matt Morse's field- ing error two batters later. The Tar- tars added another run in the third on an RBI single by Diaz. Rarely used John Locker was the starter and loser for the Wolverines. Locker gave up five hits in three in- nings of work. "They pounded us the first game," said Wayne State head coach Angelo Gust. "They asked if we wanted the mercy rule and we said 'no."' The Wolverines hit the road again tomorrow for a double header at University of Detroit, weather per- mitting. Middaugh expressed concern that, after six games in three days, the Wolverines may not have enough pitchers to go for two games. Ross Powell gets the start in the first game. Look for first base- man Haeger to get his first pitching appearance in the nightcap.
