Jordan scored a season-high 59 points, including two free throws with four seconds left in the game, to lead the Bulls to a 112-110 vic- tory over the Detroit Pistons Sunday at the Pontiac Silverdome. The loss was Detroit's fourth in a row. Chicago has won 12 of its last 16 games. JORDAN, who leads the NBA in scoring with an average of 34.3 points per game, helped set up the game-winning free throws when he and Brad Sellers teamed to steal the ball from Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer near midcourt and Jordan was fouled by Laimbeer. The play began as Thomas passed the ball to Laimbeer, who in turn tried to pass the ball when it was slapped away. "I had switched to cover Isiah, to keep him from penetrating," said Jordan. "He threw it to Laimbeer. Laimbeer tried to throw it and Brad Sellers tapped the ball away. "I picked it up. I was going for a dunk. I was going for two." The turnover was Laimbeer's second of the game. "I SHOULDN'T have made that pass," said Laimbeer, the Pis- tons' center. "I have lot of confi- dence in myself and my teammates. Unfortunately, I haven't made the right plays the last few games." Jordan, who leads the NBA in steals with an average of 3.15 per game, said he wants to be recognized as a good defensive player. "It shows the versatility of a TUESDAY LUNCH FORUM at the INTERNATIONAL CENTER - 603 E. "That's some- thing that I strive for. I've been taught defense. I like to play defense. "I just want some credit for my defense," he said. "If that means taking credit away from my offense, fine. So be it." JORDAN, who has scored 50 or more points four times this season, scored his previous season-high of 52 against Portland on February 26. Jordan set the Silverdome scoring record with 61 points, his regular- season career high, in a 125-120 overtime loss to Detroit on March 4, 1987. He also scored 61 points in a 117-114 loss to Atlanta on April 16, 1987. Thomas led Detroit with 24 points Sunday. A tip-in by Laimbeer capped a 10-2 rally that gave Detroit a 110- 109 lead with 2:58 left in the game. But Jordan sank a free throw 48 sec- onds later to knot the game at 110. THE BULLS didn't score a field goal in the final 5:37 of the game. Jordan, who spent the first 1:24 of the fourth quarter on the bench, scored four points and Dave Corzine added two free throws in a 6- 0 run that gave Chicago a 99-94 lead with 8:52 left in the game. Field goals by Jordan and Sam Vincent then pushed the Bulls' lead to 107- 100 with 5:50 left. Jordan made two free throws and two field goals to lead an 8-0 Chicago spurt to give the Bulls a 93-90 lead with 55 seconds left in the third quarter. CoFlts beat Mavs BOSTON (AP) - The Dallas Mavericks gave Larry Bird plenty of rope, and he hung them. With Dallas defending against the inside game, Bird sank seven of 10 3-pointers and scored 32 points Sunday to lead the Boston Celtics to a 110-101 NBA victory that kept the Mavericks winless at Boston Garden in their eight-year history. "If they leave me open, I'll take them, I guess," Bird said. "They were running out at me, but they weren't getting there quick enough." Bird fell one short of the league record of eight 3-pointers in a game set by Rick Barry with Houston on February 9, 1980, and tied by John Roche with Denver on January 9, 1982. He broke Danny Ainge's club record, set this season, of six. Ainge made three of six 3-point attempts Sunday as Boston tied the NBA record of 10 in a game. It was the second time this year that Bird beat the Mavericks with 3- pointers. In the other game between the teams, his 3-pointer with four seconds left gave the Celtics a 105- 104 victory in Dallas February 12. "Bird's range is 94 feet," Maver- icks coach John MacLeod said. "He'd probably shoot from the fifth row if you'd let him." Celtics coach K.C. Jones said he didn't mind Bird launching long shots if he was open.
