CAMPUS CINEMA
FRIDAY
THE PHILADELPHIA
STORY (George Cukor, 1940) Nat
Sci 7:00 & 9:05
The all-time great cast of Cary
Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Katherine
Hepburn turn the world of high
society on its head by interrupting
her impending marriage. Perfect
representative film of this era and a
truly "yare" movie.
THE GRAND ILLUSION
(Jean Renoir, 1937)MLB 4 7:00
Possibly the greatest anti-war
film ever. Renoir makes a statement
about war's fading glory and
eulogizes the death of the old
European aristocracy. With a classic
performance by Erich Von Stroheim.

MY LIFE AS A DOG (Lasse
Hallstrom, 1986) Michigan Theater
7:00
This film from Sweden is easily
one of the best films of the last few
years, and it has taken Ann Arbor by
storm. Hallstrom has been
nominated as best director, but the
film deserves much more. Follow a
young boy as he grows up and you'll
laugh, cry, and learn with him.
TAMPOPO (Juzo Itami, 1987)
Michigan Theater 9:05
Billed as the "first noodle
western" this film spoofs everything
from spaghetti westerns to karate
films to sex, and is funny every bit
of the way. Lots and lots about food
and what you could, should, and
should not do with it.
SATURDAY
THE EXTERMINATING
ANGEL (Luis Bunuel, 1962) Nat
Sci 7:00
This Spanish film is done by
Bunuel, a master of Surrealism.
wealthy aristocrats gather at a high
society dinner party only to realize
that they cannot leave. This provides
room for numerous digs at various
parts of society, including the
bourgeois, religion, and mysticism.

VIRIDIANA (Luis Bunuel,
1961) Nat Sci 9:00
Th second half of the Bunuel
double-feature is just as biting as the
first. A nun visits a lecherous uncle,
and you can only imagine what
comes of that. Chaos reigns and
Bunuel gets in his digs again. Fun
for all and even a grand prize at
Cannes.
BETTY BLUE (Jean-Jacques
Beineix, 1986) MLB 3 7:00 &
9:15
From the director of Diva comes
this French story of a woman's
struggle to live through her work,
which is her writing. She fights
against compromise and ultimately
comes to terms with her life and the
world around her.
MY LIFE AS A DOG (Lasse
Hallstrom, 1986) Michigan Theater
7:00
See Friday's listing.

A film that only Bergman could
make. The impassioned tale of the
relationship between a famous actress
who suddenly decides to stop talking
and the young nurse that is put in
charge of her. You become a part of
their world whether you like it or
not.
TOKYO OLYMPIAD (Kon
Ichikawa, 1966) Michigan Theater
5:00
The 1964 Olympics are here

documented in this tribute to
athletics. A fine photographic
monument highlighted by the
women's volleyball final between the
USSR and Japan. Full, uncut print,
and not likely to be around again
soon.
TAMPOPO (Juzo Itami, 1987)
Michigan Theater 7:50

Classic film interpretation of the
