The win, the Wolverines fifth over Mid-American Conference op- ponents, raised their record to 11-4, as they head into this weekend's Big Ten matches against Indiana and Ohio State. No. 1 singles player Tina Basle easily handled Julie Banks in straight sets 6-1,6-1. Basle, ranked No. 68 in singles nationally, seemed satisfied with her performance. "It's always nice to win," said Basle. "With the Big Ten schedule right around the corner this is a good confidence booster." Coach Bitsy Ritt shuffled the line-up yesterday so everyone could receive some match experience. First-year player Ana Schork re- placed Cathy Schmidt at the No. 6 singles position, beating Kelly King, 6-2, 6-1. "At first I was a lit- tle nervous," admitted Schork. "But I settled down once I got into my game." "I wanted to give Ana the oppor- tunity to play and gain some confi- dence," explained Ritt. "If anyone gets injured she's the first one in. She has to be ready to play." Ritt also changed all the doubles teams, giving the No.1 team of Basle and Stacey Berg a rest. Ritt moved her first two teams up a notch and inserted Natalie Butler and Susie Patlovich in at the number three spot. Wendy Stross, Kristen Ashare and Leslie Mackey all won both doubles and singles matches. Ashare and Mackey played at the No.1 doubles position in beating Banks and Bon- nie Oswald, 7-5, 6-2. Falcon player Brenda Conley had a few complaints after the match."The surface favored Michigan and the lighting wasn't very good," said Conley. "But they played real steady and were one of the best teams we've faced so far this year." With Ohio State and Indiana on deck this weekend, the Wolverines are at the top of their game. Michi- gan was recently ranked fifth in the region after starting the season at 13th. "We're anxious to start the Big Ten," said Ritt. "I'm extremely pleased with the way we've been playing. There has been a definite improvement in the last month and we're ready to prove we deserve the high ranking." m WHY CLEARY COLLEGE?
