How do you like that? Friday night at Joe Louis Arena, Sammy was knocking himself out, dancing around to "Hava Nagila" on his yet-to-fully-recover artificial hip, bringing the crowd to its feet with his poignant rendition of "Mr. Bo- jangles," and singing everything from Dr. Doolittle's "Talk With the Animals" to Michael Jackson's "Bad." And it's Sinatra that gets all the hype, the flowers, and the screams of "I Love You, Frankie!" Now, Sinatra was good. But with the exception of his kick-ass rendi- tions of "Mack the Knife" and "New York, New York," "The Chairman of the Board" schmaltzed his way through a sentimental set of lounge classics. In comparison to his more ener- getic partner, Frank stuck mostly to the ballads which found a receptive audience with the Claude Pepper set. "I fell in love with him, scream- ing 'Frankie, Frankie."' - a long time Sinatra fan, de- scribed by her husband as "one of the. original screamers", "one of the original passer-outers." But there were some younger members of the crowd, born too late to swoon to Ol' Blue Eyes in his prime, who were turned on by their parents to the sounds of Bones and the Candyman. The mother and daughter team in the fifth row was a case in point. While the mother frantically scoopedM. up Sammy's discarded Pall Mall cigarette, the daughter used three -rolls of film to capture Frank's charisma on celluloid "The class. The class that he has is incredible. I've seen Bob Seger, Kenny Rogers - nobody comes - close to Frank," the daughter said. Sammy "put his whole heart into it. Frank's a different kind of guy. Frank's always been a debonaire typeolf of guy. (like) 'I'm king of the mountain." -Rat Pack fan and owner of 15 Sammy Davis, Jr., albums The difference between the ener- getic, every-inch-the-entertainer , Davis and the reserved, tuxedo-clad Sinatra was not lost on the crowd. Or even on the band members. Ron Anthony, guitarist for the "_' Together Again Tour, described Sinatra as a perfectionist and said ,-, "he's nice, very professional. As long as you play well, there's no problem." Sammy, on the other hand, "He's beautiful," said Anthony, describing the star as "very down to earth, very approachable." "You want to see Dean Martin, you gotta buy a program." - enterprising, if tasteless, pro- gram vendor Martin's absence, due to a kidney ailment, drove some to cancel their tickets for Friday night's show, but the remaining Rat Pair more than made up for it. "It's Dean," an audi- ence member shouted as Sammy did a dead-pan imitation of the bibulous', crooner. "I think they miss his comic thing. But musically, it's a better show [with just Frank and Sammy]," said one band member. That they could turn lemons into' lemonade should come as no sur- prise, however. If anyone can do it, "the Candyman can." CLASSIFIED ADSI Call 764-0557 The Personal Column MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADS 44No matter how bad they are,.
