Page 10-The Michigan Daily-Thursday, January 14, 198 Wolverine cagers tangle with Spartans for state supremacy By GREG MOLZON Bill Frieder said it and Indiana's Bob Knight proved him right. Before Michigan b e a t Northwestern last week in its Big Ten opener, Frieder guaranteed that Northwestern would win four or five home games, including a victory or two over the top teams in the conference. The Wolverines left Evanston unscathed, but Knight's defending national champion squad was not as lucky as they were upset by the Wildcats earlier this week. Now, the Michigan head coach has issued another warning about tonight's intrastate game between the Wolverines and Michigan State at Jenison Field House (8 p.m. on Channel 62). "Don't think Michigan State is going to go through this season without beating anyone at Jenison," Frieder said. "We just hope that, like at Northwestern, we can somehow get in there and (get) out with a victory." TO REMIND his team that there are no easy wins in the Big Ten, Frieder has pointed out the upset of Indiana and the difficulty of winning at Michigan State, where the Wolverines have lost five of the last seven years under Frieder. The Spartans won last season's game at Jenison, 91-80, and even though they have one of their worst teams in recent years, Frieder warns that a win will not be easy. "I know what everyone's saying. That we have all the talent, they're struggling, and all that nonsense, but I'm going to tell you what- this is Michigan- Michigan State," Frieder said. "Teams worse than Michigan State is right now, have beaten better teams than Michigan is right now." Michigan State (5-7 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) has lost six of its last seven games and is now looking at a difficult six-day stretch of hosting Michigan and Indiana, before traveling to Purdue. "We're trying to face these games where it's not how good you are, it's how good you play," head coach Jud Heathcote said. EVEN WITH a series of tough games coming up, the Michigan game is the one the Spartans are keying on. Heathcote has spent all this week preparing for the Wolverines (13-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) and won't think about Indiana until tomorrow. "We try to get emotionally up for the Michigan game. We make that the big game," Heathcote said. To have a chance against the Wolverines, Heathcote said his team will have to slow down the tempo and keep the score in the 60s or lower. For that to happen, he will need a big game from each of his players. Carlton Valentine has led the Spartan scorers this year with 14.8 points per game, but he is the only player scoring in double figures. The 6-5, senior forward is shooting 59 percent from the field and grabbing 5.5 rebounds per game. CENTER George Papadakos is a seven-footer who doesn't scare anyone, but does give the Spartans some size inside. He is averaging 9.5 points and six rebounds per game. The other probable starters are Ken Redfield at forward, and Steve Smith and Ed Wright at guards. Spartan football receiver Andre Rison, who recently joined the basketball squad, will also see playing time. The 5-10 point guard was a starter on the Flint Northwestern team that Wolverine Glen Rice led to two straight state championships. Rison will add quickness and good ballhandling skills to the Spartan backcourt. Kirk Manns, Bobby Worthington, and Jesse Hall are likely to see significant playing time as well. While the Wolverines know they have the edge in talent, no one is about to guarantee a win, a ia Antoine Joubert two years ago. "We can't have them beating us anymore. Every year we have the most talent, but go down there and lose some way," Michigan guard Gary Grant said. "We know that, so we're just going to work hard and try to break the jinx down there." And for anyone willing to listen, Frieder said that Heathcote will have the Spartans playing up to what they are capable. "Their very best game last year, the year before, and every other damn year is against Michigan in Jenison. And they'll play their butts off (tonight)." Michigan teammates Glen Rice (41) and Mike Griffin (20) battle for a loose ball during last year's game against Michigan State. The Wolverines, who split last year's series with the Spartans, will be looking for their 13th straight win tonight in East Lansing. - .111.11, .......... . z"", 0 ) MICHIGRA S ErnI~.m mI13 4 Michigan Daily SPORTS 763-0376 SJ I a %' Mass Meeting / 0 O@Am'OMB 0 iI on M@VU 0 Mon.
