-, ,- Fashion: It's all in how you hold your Slurpee It was the very first day of spring, and I was riding in a car with Jeff Slosar to the Briarwood mall. I had no idea who he was. "Did you really close your eyes and pick my name out of the direc- tory?" he asked. I nodded my head. I wasn't sure he understood. As columnist for Weekend Magazine, I had an obliga- tion to write about fashion this week. Problem was, I don't know the first thing about it. Cosmopolitans do not grace my coffee table, and Mom still buys most of my clothes. For the past five years, I have worn virtually nothing but solid colored V- neck sweaters, oxford shirts, slacks, dress socks, and penny loafers. I have not worn blue jeans since the eighth grade. I figured, nobody could be more ignorant on the subject than myself. Anyone would have to know more. So I opened the student directory, JOHN SHEA says 'keeping up with the styles of the time.' It also says that fashion is the way you cary yoursel" "'The way you cawy yourself'?" I said. "I don't think I've ever thought of 'fashion' that way befhre." "You ever had a Slurpee before?" he asked. "Maybe. I'm not sure." "Tur into Sears" he ordered. Apparently, accoding to Jeff, one of the ways to"cay yourself" and be fashionable is to drink Slurpees. Now, the first thing I want to say about Jeff isthat be is a very amiable guy who bubbles with enthusiasm. The second thing I want to say about Jeff is that all he knows about fash- ion can be neatly tucked into a Swatch. $p i~*1 Days Lease any apartment between. March 16 and March 31;1988 for $100.. "Yon mean for the summer?" "Sure." "Oh,just shorts and everything." "What did you say your major was again?" "gieering pyis.") Make that a ladies Swatch. No matter. He still knows more than Ido. He explained to me what a "banana clip" was when I called him on the phone and after that I asked him to came alng with me. I needed someone to interpret all the fashion lingo. I also needed his help because I wanted to buy something. I've been listening to the whispers from friends and colleagues that I am not "the hippest dresser in the world" and shouldchangemyattreabit. Maybe they are right.SoI was there to buy one article of clothing. Something "hip" and "with it." But frst, the SIrpees. "Al, ah! See this! This is fash- ion!" Jeff said as the lady behind the refreshment center at Sears gave us two Slurpees. He pointed to the clear, plastic round bubble which serves as the top for the drink. "A ' xkie dome,'" he explained. "Never get the 'rookie tarp' (flat-top plastic covering) because it takes away from the surface area. We're actually get- ting more for our money with the 'dome.' Ihadnoiea whatthis had to do with fashion, but he knew more about itthan I di,soIjustsucked on my straw and looked down into the bubble. Suddenly, it occurred to me: he was right. You do get more for your mney with the dome. We entered the mall with our See SHEA, Page 21 STRESS, Continzued from Page 8 the whole. With the return of 1960 styles and fashions comes a prominence of eth- nic accessories, which - while ex- pensive, since the majority are im- ports, are incredibly fun to pile on. The possible combinations of beads, bracelets, anklets, necklaces, earings, scarves, and sarongs are limitless. Straw hats, for both men and women, are also a bundle of fun, though short-lived fun. The average wearing-life of a straw hat has got to be under one month. At the most. They're just so crushable. So when the daily stresses and pressures of life start to hit you from every side, don't get down, just get even. "Just look stress straight in the eye and say 'lookin' good, feelin' good,"' laughed School of Art sophomore Gail Shusterman.
