The Michigan Daily-Friday, March 25, 1988- Page 13 Minority politics addressed By TED POPELY As part of Arab American Awareness Week, more than 50 people attended a speech last night on the introduction of increasing numbers of minority Americans in the national political system. The awareness week - which has featured Arab and Middle East cultural events - is sponsored by the two-year-old University chapter of the Arab American University Graduates Youth Section. The events continues tonight with a display of Middle East handcrafts and finishes tomorrow with a fashion show in the Michigan Union. "Eliminating ignorance of the Arab political situation will also eliminate some of the stereotypes about Arab Americans," said Basil Salah, a senior LSA student and head of organization for the Arab American University Graduates Youth Section. The AAUG Youth Section is a campus organization dedicated to informing people about the Arab American community and about the Arab situation abroad. Salah said the organization also performs an important social function for Arab Americans. In a place where it is often difficult for Arab Americans to adjust, "We create a bond with one another," said Salah. About 50 people attended a talk given by Jim Zogby, founder of the nationally recognized Arab American Institute and national co-chair of the Jesse Jackson presidential campaign. His speech, entitled "Ethnic and Minority Emergence in the 1988 Presidential election," focused on the introduction of increasing numbers of minority Americans in the national political system. "The Statue of Liberty faces out; it promises free ideas," said Zogby in his argument that today's American foreign policy organization is not representative of the constituent members of American citizens. Zogby said that Arab Americans have made progress in terms of governmental representation. "We've come a very long way in a short period of time." Zogby connected his wish fot Arab American and minority involvement in government with a call for support of Jesse Jackson for president. "(The Jackson campaign) is not merely a candidate; it's a movement," said Zogby. Stephen Wert, an LSA first-year student and Rumsey House representative, read a typed speech to other house council members citing the reasons for the withdrawal of Rumsey residents from all future WQBN activities. Other houses have slandered Rumsey House in the past and "the main forum for this skulldugerry has *+**.'382%%:2528%2$ been the so-called WQBN Council and its weekly meetings," he said. But Andrea Wendling, an LSA sophomore and president of WQBN, said she had heard no problems from Rumsey prior to the meeting. "At the end of every meeting I asked if anyone had any problems, an d nothing was said." Brian Felder, an RC junior and resident adviser in Wenley House said, "I think it's good for them to bring up concerns they may have about the way WQBN operates but I don't recall ever in the minutes that a WQBN representative from Rumsey has ever brought up those concerns." Caucuses Continued from Page 1 Polling sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. The rules followed at these sites will be those of the Democratic National Committee. Identification showing age and proper residence is necessary to par- ticipate in the caucuses. Acceptable forms of ID include a valid Michigan driver's license, a State of Michigan ID card, or a voter registration card. A word to the wise - there is only one site where each person can Israel Continued from Page 5 threats than nothing has changed." If voters show up at the wrong site they will not be allowed to vote there, but should be told where to go. A caucus sign-in sheet must also be filled out stating that a person is a Democrat and is either registered to vote, or is 17 years-old and will be registered to vote before the Nov. 9 general election. Anyone who is not registered to vote may register at the polling sites tomorrow. A ballot will then be given to the voter listing the five qualified Democratic presidential candidates, a space for write-in candidates, and the choice of "uncommitted." with a plea that peace is possible. He concluded saying, "Together we'll work out a formula, together we'll live." Poker's presentation received mixed responses from the audience. Audience member Jamal El-hindi was one such objector who criticized Poker's political position. "On the one hand they present the idea of a Euphoric State and on the other hand they have world opinion saying that the state is built upon the bones of other people," El-hindi said. Subletters Continued from Page 1 not find a subtenant last year, she was forced to sublet to friends, tak- ing a 60 percent loss for each month's rent. Second year MBA student Mike Sonnabend, like Wynn, was more successful this year in finding sub- tenants. "This year worked out a lot better than last year," he said. Sonnabend said "luck" was one of two factors which influenced his success this year. The other factor, he said, was money. "We were realistic about the asking price," he said. This year, Sonnabend asked for half the regular rental rate. He said his biggest mis- take last year was asking for more than 50 percent of his rent. Because the open market drives prices down, sublet prices are often one-third to one-half of the regular rent. But efficiency and one-bedroom units can usually draw close to the full rent, Rumsey said. "There is more negotiability in larger units." MSA Continued from Page 1 meeting next week. Phillips and Overdorf, represent- ing the widely-publicized Students First party, captured more than 1,200 of roughly 2,500 votes, the lowest turn-out this decade. The number of votes cast for the presi- dential slates was almost 1,000 less than the votes cast on the PIRGIM ballot questions. The Students First candidates want to emphasize fighting racism, sexism, and homophobia on campus through education. In addition, Overdorf and Phillips say they will continue to lobby leg- islators in Lansing and Washington, D.C. for more financial aid and a tu- ition freeze. They support the Michigan Collegiate Coalition, a According to the WQBN bylaws; any house which does not have a representative attending two consecutive meetings will have their use of equipment suspended for tho entire semester. Since Rumsey has withdrawn from the house council, the residents may not be allowed to participate in social events or use any WQBN equipment, such as the VCR or a new weight room. But Rumseyites maintain that th other houses are jealous of theim winning intramural athletics, campus-wide social gatherings, and superior interhouse trivia games. Lansing-based group that lobbied state legislators for such student in-i terests. A referendum question about MCC - which appeared to be suc- cessful at press time - seeks to fund the group by tacking on 35t cents to the $7.00 student fee. The. fee increase would have to be ap- proved by the University's Board of Regents, which sets the assembly's fee level. A referendum urging Congress to. honor Vietnam Veterans on May 7 and another asking students whether they wanted a campus-wide vote a code of conduct before the assembly votes on it both passed easily. The Common Sense presidential slate received slightly over 700, votes. Party members decided not to campaign when their presidential, candidate, LSA junior Cheryl Tilles, dropped out of the race after admit- ting to fraud charges. Truce Continued from Page 1 Nicaragua hurt the Sandinista gov- ernment more than the contras ever could. Nicaragua conducted one half of its trade with America prior to the embargo, and the United States urged many of its allies to stop trading with them also. She also stressed that it is important for Congress not to send any more aid to the contras. "I think that any aid the U.S. wants to give should be given to the Sandinistas to help resettle contras," she said. Poker ended his presentation SUPER SPRING!
