Fog prevented Democratic
presidential candidate Sen. Paul
Simon of Illinois from landing at
Michigan airports yesterday, forcing-
the cancellation of a noon press
conference on the front steps of the
"Michigan Union and speeches at the
Law School and School of Business
Administration.
He has rescheduled to give a press
conference on the Union steps at
11:30 today, and will, walk through
the Diag before attending a class at
the Business School.
Local campaign volunteers said
,Simon's plane was unable to land in
Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Grand
Rapids because of inclement
weather.
Simon, who would have been the
fourth of the five Democratic
candidates to visit the University
this week, is trailing far behind
Massachusetts Gov. Michael
Dukakis and Rev. Jesse Jackson in
polls of Michigan voters. Tennessee
Sen. Albert Gore also leads Simon
in the number of elected delegates.

EXTRAS
Oscar the Grouch trashed for
living in recyclable home
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - Oscar the Grouch, the guru of garbage on
television's "Sesame Street," has been asked to remove all recyclables
from his trash can home.
The famous character on the long-running PBS-TV children's show
reccntly received a letter from Paula Barnabie, who works for the Camden
County Office of Solid Waste.
Every day, Barnabie wrote, the clank of aluminum, the crunch of
newspapers, and the tinkle of glass can be heard as Oscar fights his way
to the surface of his trash can to snarl at Sesame Street residents.
"I watch the program every day with my nephew, and I just couldn't
take it any more," she said. "It would be so much nicer and
environmentally sound for you to have a recycling bucket near your trash
can.
