Page 8 -The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, March 23, 1988 4 Iowa looks to avenge Arizona loss in NCAA West rematch FINAL FOUR COUNTDOWN 1st Round: 2nd Raxxd: March 17-18 March 19-20 ED WEST P*gk)o als 2nd Pound: March 19-20 WEST 1a Rou7d March 17-18 DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Coach Tom Davis figures that the Arizona Wildcats, having beaten his team during the season, have every reason to do it again. No. 17 Iowa and second-ranked Arizona meet Friday in one of two semifinals of the NCAA West Regional in Seattle - a rematch of a game that Arizona won, 66-59, in Iowa City Dec. 12. The winner of that rematch will face the winner of another rematch - Michigan meets North Carolina in the other West Regional semifinal. Those two teams' first meeting ever - in the second round of last year's tournament - resulted in a 109-97 North Carolina win. SHOULD MICHIGAN win its matchup with North Carolina, another rematch will occur, as the Wolverines played both Arizona and Iowa this season. Michigan lost to Arizona in Alaska and split with Iowa during the Big Ten season. Arizona's win at Iowa City was coach Lute Olsen's first appearance at Carver-Hawkeye Arena since he left the job in 1983 to take over the Arizona program, which has gone from 3-24 before he arrived to 33-2 now. "The fact they beat us on our homecourt has to give Arizona a lot of confidence," Davis said Tuesday in a telephone news conference yesterday from Seattle. "They beat us on our homecourt, and now they're meeting us on a neutral court. "I thought Arizona played with a lot of poise at Carver-Hawkeye," he said. "They came in and did what you have to do to win on the road. They showed their experience even then." DAVIS SAID his own team is feeling confident, too, mainly because of the Hawkeyes' 104-86 second- round regional victory over Nevada-Las Vegas Sunday night. UNLV kept Iowa from going to the Final Four last year, storming back from a 16-point halftime deficit to sideline the Hawkeyes, 84-81, in the West Regional finals. "We were really pleased with the Vegas win," Davis said. "There's no question it was an important game for us. They (the Iowa players) have got to be very pleased with what they've accomplished. "The thing that I'm most pleased about is that from the team that was here in Seattle a year ago, we've lost four of our top eight players. That means some new people are in here doing this thing. To have them back (in the Sweet 16) is a real tribute to our ballclub. You have to give credit to the seniors in particular." Davis acknowledged his team might have the edge because the final two rounds of last year's West Re- gional also were in the Kingdome.
