Basketball vs. North Carolina Friday, 8 p.m. Seattle Kingdome, Ch. 2 SPORTS Basketball Midwest Regional Friday and Sunday Pontiac Silverdome , a The Michigan Daily Wednesday, March 23, 1988 Page4 Baseball Wolverines triumph in home opener Continued from Page 1 sharp. The senior right-hander struck out four in three innings of work and allowed only one ball out of the in- field. "I thought our pitching was very mediocre," said Middaugh, "But Iggy threw really well." IGNA SIA K worked out of a jam in the first. A single by Smith put Grand Valley runners on first and third with only one out. Ignasiak proceeded to strike out cleanup hitter Jeff Terpstra on a major league curveball before Mike Kolo flied out to right. The major league curveball was noticed by several major league scouts in attendance, who also clocked Ignasiak's fastball early on at 88 MPH. The Wolverine batters seemed energized by Ignasiak's heroics. Michigan pounded Grand Valley hurlers Gary Smith and Tim Schuppe for 11 runs in the first two innings. Junior catcher Darrin Campbell led the charge with four ribbies, on a two-run homer in the first and a sin- gle in the second. ABBOTT provided the most ex- citement in the latter part of the lopsided second contest, getting his first two hits ever after coming in as DH. He squibbed one down the first- base line in the third and lined one past the second baseman in the fifth. Grand Valley could only garner five hits for the game, matching its output for the first game. In that first game, the Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first two innings off Grand Valley starter Mark Potter. The Wolverines answered the Lakers' two runs off Abbott with three of their own in the bottom of the third. Gene Haeger led off the inning with a triple followed by a walk by Campbell, the star of the first game. Tom Brock and Doug Kaiser both lashed RBI singles to give Michigan the lead for good. BROCK was the hitting star of the game. The senior right fielder was three-for-three, coming up just a home run short of the cycle. Brock also had two runs and two RBIs - to go along with three more RBIs he got in the nightcap. Ross Grimes finished up to earn his first save of the year. Michigan's two rookie first basemen both had fine days. Greg Haeger went two-for-four with two runs and an RBI, and Dan Ruff, playing DH, was almost identical, going two-for-four with two runs and two RBIs. "The younger guys are the ones that are hitting well," said Mid- daugh, adding that he's been disap- pointed with some of the veterans. Middaugh, though, was pleased with his team's fielding after some rough times on Michigan's spring trip. Shortstop Steve Finken turned in some sparklers while also keeping his batting average above .500, go- ing two-for-three for the day. The Lakers, on the other hand, commit- ted only three errors thanks to some generous scoring decisions. The Wolverines' winning streak goes to six with the sweep. They stand at 7-5 heading into a pair of weekend twinbills against Ball State. ESPN SCHOOL 1. Oklahoma 2. Texas 3. Stanford 4. Miami (Fl 5. California 6. Fresno St. 7. Mississipp 8. Texas A&r 9.
