4 Page 8-The Michigan Daily-Monday, March 21, 1988 Redundancy hampers plays Guitarist Parkeni ng shows master By Elizabeth Block The metronome-like minds of the madmen of Every Good Boy De- serves Favour and WOLF were one indication of the redundancy prevalent in the production at the Power Center last weekend. Both plays, illustrious with staging and lighting, blurted out the obvious intent of the program within the first 10 minutes, so that it reached a crescendo before the accompanying music even began. The notion of madness was very loud, and the energy bubbled on overload from the start. Thus there was no dramatic peak to which the actors could ascend. The message of the variations- on-a-theme of madness do-si-doing from institution to institution was quite clear. Its meaning screamed for attention from EGBDF's opening, rather than culminating in dramatic catharsis. The most useful balance against this initial tone of the play was the bird-like qualities of Ivanov (Yusef Bulos). This was a most in- spiring highlight of the h urm an workings on stage. The stage was elaborate and imaginatively used. Intermingled with three platforms for actors was a 70 piece orchestra. Yet at one point in the play, Alexander says, "Never mix music with politics." Ironically, Stoppard and Previn do just that with the use of the languid, heavy chords of Soviet composers Shostakovich and Prokofiev. The irony of the relentless, sorrowful Soviet tunes with the absurdity in the confines of a Soviet institution somehow mesh in EGBDF. Yet the play was so blatant in form and de- liverance that a serious intake of any theme beyond nihilism and absurdity seems impossible. More of the same relentless, pounding energy prevailed i n Nicholas Delbanco's WOLF. Al- though stunning in form, Del- banco's language proved a bit eso- teric and elite for a large stage show. Gregory's synthesized music was innovative, yet struck a separate note than that of the workings of the mind of Edward, the clock collector. The staging, set design, and lights, however, carried much of WOLF. Most notable was the round, cell-like room - a metaphorical representation of a clock - filled with clocks. Each clock was propped upon a shelf, roaming the circumference of the space. In the center sat a spinning chair on which Edward spun his own time. Both plays mixed tradition with experimental forms of communica- tion and staging, yet somehow there existed a rift between these two. Perhaps not only is it true that mu- sic and politics do not mix, but it is also true of music and poetical lan- guage. For poetical language, if it is quality work, can hold its own. Un- less of course the two are composed in tandem, rather than out of opposition, or dissonance, as poeti- cal language and music manifest themselves in both EGBDF and WOLF. the promise of a By Michael Fischer On rare occasions, the most breathtaking effect of a great concert, even beyond the performance itself, can be the promise it reveals. Delighting a sold-out audience at Rackham Auditorium Friday night with a brilliant display of accomplished technical sophistication and engaging artistic vision, classical guitarist Christopher. Parkening provided such an elusive thrill. Watching the effort involved as he assays a catalogue of virtuoso touches, one can't help but estimate that ever-narrowing gap between Parkening's current performance and perfection -if such an ideal exists. Beginning the concert with a set of three renaissance lute-pieces, Parkening immediately established his mastery of the instrument. Gliding his fingers across the fretboard in a series of elegantly-textured, wistfully ornate melodic figures, Parkening ended the first se- lection with enchanting brush-strokes of harmonics. Throughout the third offering he deftly interspersed some tonal variations, moving his picking-fingers up- and-down to alternate between a twangy, harpischord- like sound and smooth, fuller-sounding notes. But the difficult chord-changes of these dense compositions showed at times in Parkening's somewhat tentative approach. For all his fluid grace, Parkening will only begin to touch on legendary status when he can really make such pieces look truly effortless. As the rest of his show suggested, though, such ascendancy is not far away. After contrasting those lute-pieces with three Spanish style pieces, Parkening showed his interpretive creativity, conjuring up an ornate baroque atmosphere with a trio by J.S. Bach. In his last solo selection, Parkening played a piece of variations on a theme by Mozart - in a special tribute to his late mentor, Andrds Segovia - stunning the crowd with quickly-spiralling arpeggios. Assisting guitarist David Brandon then brought an added dimension of texture, highlighted in the captivating Latin stylings of the three encore duos he and Parkening performed. In the lovely Spanish folk song "El Pano Maruno," for instance, Brandon tapped out a little percussion and some fiery rhythmic strums while Parkening worked out rich melodic colors. Unlike Segovia or perhaps John Williams, Parkening played from sheet music throughout - mere visual evidence of the shrinking tether on his authority. This thrilling artist is still quite young - in his early forties at most. It's just a matter of time, it seems, be- fore he will fulfill the promise of sheer magic hinted at. .4 q 4 i Te Calendar of The University of Michigan The calendar combines meeting, lecture work- shop and conference announcements with other events happening each week on campus.
