Bogart is detective Philip Mar-
lowe, investigating Lauren Bacall's
younger sister's gambling debts. An
absolute classic, it doesn't get any
better than this. William Faulkner
contributed to the screenplay and it
is muddled in a way only he could
manage. Hawks was at the height of
his powers.
Beat the Devil (John Huston,
1953)
One of Huston's "smaller" works
that many film buffs cite as among
their favorites: bizarre characters and
plot twists abound in a movie which
defies convention.
