Page 8--The Michigan Daily-Friday, March 18, 1988 4 Festiva Artists By Preeti Malani The talents of pianist Gail Davis Barnes, poet T.J. Anderson III, and artist/photographer Robert Banks will be featured Saturday night at the Festival of Ann Arbor Artists. The festival is a benefit performance for the Student Advocacy Center. The Center works with students and their families to see that appropriate services are received from the public school system. The center works primarily with minority and handi- capped students, according to spokesperson, Ruth Zweifter. Barnes, an independent private piano teacher and performer in Ann Arbor, studied music at Ohio State University and at the University. "I .1 of Ann Arbor students benefit grew up with music," Barnes ex- plains. She began playing the piano at age five and had a great deal of exposure to classical and jazz from her parents. She holds a special in- terest in Afro-American music. This is the focus of her upcoming per- formance. Her lecture recitals on Afro-American music have been enthusiastically received at several cities around the nation. One of the high points i n Barnes' career came when she had the opportunity to teach general music and music appreciation to a group of international students in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. She is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, Delta Omicron Music Fraternity, Michigan Music Teachers Association, Music' Teachers National Association, and the Ann Arbor Area Piano Teachers Guild. Anderson is a current graduate student at the University, and he expects to receive a M.F.A. with major emphasis on creative writ- ing/poetry this year. Anderson's honors from the University include the Rackham Minority Fellowship and the Major Hopwood Award for Poetry. He has received several other honors from various confer- ences and learning institutions in addition to being a teaching assis- tant at the University. Banks is an Ann Arbor artist working in both painting and pho- tography. He studied at the People's Art Center in St. Louis, and cur- rently he is working both as a teacher and lecturer. The recurring theme in his work details the Black experience. His paintings include portraits and realistic scenes and are done in many mediums including oils, pastels, charcoal, and acrylic. His photographs consist of land- scapes and people. Banks is well known for both his artwork and his service to the community. THE FESTIVAL OF ANN AR- BOR artists will be this Saturday, March 19 at 8 p.m. This event will be held at the Unitarian Church, 1917 Washtenaw.
