Page 8 -The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, March 16, 1988 The 'Little- but- Still -Beautiful' Contest By John Shea Even though spring is only around the corner, when you hear the word "pool" these days, you are not thinking about the YMCA kind. You are thinking about the NCAA kind. Is not everyone on this campus "prediction happy" right now? Sure. March means the NCAA basketball tournament and the Academy Awards, two larger-than-life specta- cles that have become such perma- nent staples of our culture that we feel compelled to predict, if not wa- ger, on their outcomes. But the noticeable difference be- tween the two events is that all 64 participants of the NCAA tourna- ment receive a fair amount of atten- tion. In predicting what will happen in the tournament, one has to con- sider little schools, say, like Boise State, perhaps upsetting a team or two. With the Oscars, few ever con- sider the little people. All we care about is the six major categories: Actor, Actress, Supporting Actress, an art of following the newspapers and Entertainment Tonight than knowing what's going on in the film industry. This, of course, takes away most of the fun. So that's why I feel we need an- other contest from the Free Press, a contest that at once pays tribute to all the little people while enabling those who know a lot about the movie industry to show off their knowledge. Hence, the following is the "Michigan Daily Little-but-Still- Beautiful Oscar Contest." Gran Prize is four tickets to the Ann Ar bor 1 & 2. Seven "little categories" are listed, with each category worth a designated number of points; circle the nominee you believe will win. The entry with the most points wins, with a drawing to be held in case of a tie. Bring your entries in with your name and phone number to 420 Maynard Street. Deadline is April 1. Best Achievement in Cin- ematography. The art of photog- raphy is a painstaking one. And how easily we forget that the camera is our eyes in the theatre. It is our vi- sion. Without it, we are blind. Surely, this is worth one point: Michael Ballhaus, Broadcast News ; Allen Daviau, Empire of the Sun; Philippe Rousselot, Hope and Glory; Vittorio Storaro, The Last Emperor; Haskell Wexler, Matewan. Best Achievement in Sound. Do you think it's easy Starship's hit single 'Nothing box-office success. Now, their Supporting Actor, Director and Film. These categories, which we'll call "The Beautiful Categories," re- ceive all the attention and all the hype, while all the little people nominated in the "little categories," - those folks behind the scenes - are by and large forgotten. Do you g's Gonna Stop Us Now' singlehandly rocketed 'Mannequin' to song has been nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar. ever watch an entire telecast of the Oscars? No. You start watching at 11:30 p.m. when the Academy starts reeling off the names of the big winners. This is sad. Besides, the feeling of triumph of predicting all seven of the Beautiful Categories correctly is a hollow one at best. Critics around the country and insiders of the industry talk about the Oscars and project winners the day the nominations come out. More often than not, we know who is going to win before the telecast. Predicting the Oscars becomes more "PlC" UP A FRIEND AT THE UGL In Conjuction with the Conference on the Holocaust DR. CHARLES ADAMS: THE BLACK THURSDAY. - JEWISH MARCH 17 DIALOGUE 7PM dubbing in voices and sounds? Nope. Besides, the men serve as our ears in the theatre. They are our hearing. And since the loss of hearing is just as bad as the loss of vision, we'll make this category worth one point as well: Robert Knudson, Don Digiro- lamo, John Boyde and Tony DawnL Empire of the Sun; Bill Row and, Ivan Sharrock, The Last Emperor; Les Fresholtz, Dick Alexander, Vern Poore and Bill Nelson, Lethal Weapon; Michael J. Kohut, Carlos DeLarios, Aaron Rochin and Robert Wald, Robocop; Wayne Artman, Tom Beckert, Tom Dahl and Art Rochester, The Witches of Eastwick. Best Achievement in Ani- mated Short Films. Cartoons get such a bad rap, we'll make this one worth two points: George and Rosemary; The Man. Who Planted Trees; Your Face. Best Achievement in Docr, umentary Features. This is in- cluded because documentary film- makers are defecting over to videQ. because they feel they can get morg, recognition and more money. I can't offer them money, but I can say, their contribution to the film indus- try is worthy of acknowledgement and one point: Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years; Hellfire: A. Journey from Hiroshima; Radio Bikini; A Stitch in Time; The Ten- Year Lunch: The Wit and Legend of the Algonquin Round Table. Best Achievement in Makeup. You don't think the Beautiful People look so beautiful all by themselves, do you? One- point: Bob Laden, Happy New Year Rick Barry, Harry and the Hfender- sons. Best Achievement in Song (Original Score). The oft-ma- ligned but oh-so-important category of best original song.'People bad mouth this category year and year and I'm getting mighty tired of it. People just don't realize how hard it is to write a song. First, you have to sit down and write the lyrics; then,, you have to sit down and write the, music. It's hard. Let's make this, category worth two points, one for. each lyrics and music: "Cry Freedom," Cry Freedom;, "(I've Had) The Time of :My Life", Dirty Dancing; "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," Mannequin; "Shakedown," Beverly Hills Cop 1; "Storybook Love," The Princess Bride. When the Damn' Oscar Show is Gonna End. If there's one thing people love to do on Oscar night, other than picking the win- ners, is predicting when the damn curtain is going to fall for the final time and the Beautiful People run off to all the Beautiful Parties. So write down below when you think the show is going to end. If you're within three minutes, either way, you'll be credited with a correct an swer. A I figure this one's worth five points.
