Axelrod told about 50 students and community members that professors at any university should not have the s right to do military research. as Axelrod disputed claims raised by many that professors should have an "academic freedom," meaning they should be able to research whatever they want. "On (the University's) campus, the issue of military research is de- liberately mutated to avoid talking about militarism at all," he said. "Instead, all that we hear about is something called academic freedom." But Political Science Prof. Ray- mond Tanter responded in an inter- view, "What is lethal to one person may not be lethal to another person. I do not think the University should make a judgement over the ability of scholars to pursue their inquiries... Once you start banning research, the next step, is to ban teaching." Axelrod said politics cannot be separated from research. "No matter what (Vice President for Research) Linda Wilson says about how she doesn't want politics here, it's missing the point," Axelrod said. Wilson was unavailable for comment. University LSA senior Jackie Victor, co-chair of the MSA Peace and Justice committee, also spoke at the forum. She said students at MSU should get involved in fight- ing against weapons research on campus. Victor is a member of the Uni- versity's Coalition Against Weapons Research, a group which is trying to monitor and bring to public atten- tion to the military research taking place at the University. Victor criticized the University's Board of Regents for revoking the research policy guidelines last April. Prior to then, classified research projects that had an "end-use" that could be used "to kill or maim hu- man beings" wasnot allowed. No such guidelines currently exist. Victor said of the forum, "One of the exciting things is that there is communication between the two universities." Lansing Area Nuclear Weapons freeze worker Alan Fumas said, "The arms race can be stopped, but the public has to stop it, it won't stop by itself." The state is one of seven vying for the physics research facility, which is expected to employ 11,000 people to build and 3,000 to operate. Michigan officials on Wednesday accepted a $7 million bid on a contract for appraisal of land in Ingham and Jackson counties that would be affected by the super collider "In one sense, it's a lot of money," said John Hanieski, executive director of Michigan's Superconducting Super Collider Commission. But he said the cost "is reasonable and proportional to the potential gain." Residents can expect to learn late this summer what they would be offered for their property, he said. SovietR family hijacks plane MOSCOW - A family of musicians from Siberia who hijacked an Aeroflot jet hid their weapons inside their instruments, then opened fire and set off a bomb when an army assault team stormed the plane, Soviet media said yesterday. Five of the hijackers, who were led by two brothers and their mother, died in the assault and subsequent fire aboard the jetliner on Tuesday, as did three passengers and a stewardess, Tass said. Two of the sky pirates committed suicide and the matriarch, once honored as a Hero Mother of the Soviet Union, was shot dead by family members, the official news agency said. Eleven hijackers commandeered the Tupolev-154 jet as it was en route to Leningrad after a fueling stop in the Ural Mountain city of Kurgan, and they told the pilot to fly to London, Tass said. Riots continue in Gaza Strip HEBRON, Occupied West Bank - Palestinians rioted near Jewish enclaves and Jews drove down Arab streets early yesterday firing at houses and savaging cars, the army and witnesses said. Soldiers wounded three Arabs. Troops shot and critically wounded two other Arabs in the occupied Gaza Strip, hospital officials said. In a new leaflet issued yesterday, underground Palestinian strike leaders told residents of the occupied territories to take revenge on Jewish settlers, Palestinians who aid Israel and those who sympathize with Jordan. Deaf students protest hiring of new university president WASHINGTON- Gallaudet University students declared yesterday that Elisabeth Ann Zinser, the new president of the school for the deaf, is unwelcome on the campus and vowed to keep her out, althoug a member of congress wants her to learn firsthand about the students' concerns. Students have been protesting the selection-of Zinser, who is not deaf and does not know sign language, and their demonstrtions have halted virtually all instruction for four days. They have promised to continue their protests until she resigns. They threatened to seize the president's campus house and office if Zinser made her way past students blocking entrances to the school. EXTRAS Hospital wait proves fruitful for long-lost Florida cousins TAMARAC, Fla. (AP) - When a nurse in a hospitalwaiting room called the name Gnau, two cousins who hadn't see each other in 60 years stood up. "I looked at him and asked him his name," said 73-year-old Elmer Gnau, a retired tool and dye maker. "I knew if he said Kenneth, he would be my cousin. Not many people are namedGnau." The chance meeting was an emotional experience for the two soft- spoken men, who last saw each other when they were children in Louisville, Ky. Elmer was 13 and Kenneth 3. "I never thought I would have recognized him," said Kenneth Gnau, 63. "But I looked up, and my stomach came right up to my throat. He has the face of my father. I almost cried." Elmer Gnau, who lives in LaGrange, Ky., said he was in Florida to visit his son, Jerry Gnau, in North Lauderdale when the after-effects of a bout of pneumonia sent him to the hospital. Kenneth Gnau, who retired to Margate with his wife, was waiting for an X-ray of a shoulder injury. The cousins, whose fathers were brothers, planned to visit each other later this week after Kenneth Gnau has shoulder surgery. If you see news happen, call 76-DAILY.
