ARTS The Michigan Daily Thursday, March 10, 1988- Pge 7 'Right You Are' The truth can hurt $y Lynn Gettleman Where can you find vicious gos- sips, family secrets, the obsessive guest for truth, and the questioning of reality? Just walk to the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre sometime be- tween Thursday, March 10, and Sunday, March 13 to catch a perfor- Mance of Luigi Pirandello's 1917 drama, Right You Are If You Think You Are. Performed by University undergraduates, this drama explores what happens when cruel town gos- sips force a private family affair into the public arena. Right You Are If You Think You Are is the earliest dramatic work of Pirandello, establishing him as a master of drama, as well as a noted author of fiction. Such playwright- ing earned Pirandello the 1934 Nobel Prize for Literature. In this particular drama, Piran- dello creates a comic world of town gossips that encompasses the more tragic realm of an individual family. This dual world allows Pirandello to examine the effects of people who become too obsessive in their search for truth. A discrepancy soon arises between the public' right to know, and the private rights of the individ- ual. According to director Hillary Co- hen, Pirandello uses the situation to search for the nature of reality and truth while providing humor and in- sight. "For a play that was written in 1917, this drama has a very con- temporary feel," she adds. Cohen, an assistant professor of Theatre and Drama, is also the co- founder of Wild Swan Theatre and vice-president of the National Asso- ciation for Theatre and Disability. Wild Swan Theater is a company that offers accessible performances to the disabled, low income audiences, and minority children- as well as conducting workshops with disabled performers. Cohen has previously directed The Importance of Being Earnest, The Rivals, Endgame, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. This weekend's production of Right You Are If You Think You Are , is fortunate to have costumes created by visiting costume designer Jessica Hahn (not that one!) - formerly of the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Known for costumes in various productions at the Goodman, Court, Candlelight, and Northlight theatres, Hahn received the Joseph Jefferson Award for her designs in Seascape, Hello Dolly, and You Can Never Tell. Set design is by Eric Renschler, formerly the Assistant Technical Director for the Indiana Repertory Theatre, and the principle scenic de- signer for the Warren Performing Arts Center in Indianapolis. Ren- schler is currently an MFA student in the theatre design program at the University. Right You Are If You Think You Are was last performed at Mendelssohn in 1967 by the APA Phoenix Repertory Company, and it starred Helen Hayes, Will Greer, Sydney Walker, and Ellis Rabb. You can catch RIGHT YOU ARE IF YOU THINK YOU ARE at 8 p.m. on March 10,11, and 12, and March 13. Tickets can be purchased at the League Ticket Office and are available for $9 and $6 reserved seating, and special student seating is $4 (with I.D.). Call the League Ticket Office at 764-0450.
