Un- fortunately, what resulted is a bad album that actually does sound as if Chadbourne recorded it because he had to. The album consists of 14 songs, both covers and original material, of differing musical styles, including Robert Fripp's haunting "I Talk to the Wind," which sounds vaguely like Wall of Voodoo and is enough to make me want to throw myself in disgust on the edge of my copy of In the Court of the Crimson King. The original material isn't any better. "Fayettenam" sounds like the music from the soundtrack of Rais- ing Arizona, while "Evil Filthy Preacher" could have been funny - the lyrics certainly are - but Chad- bourne's voice is too nasal and throaty. The production of this record is murky, and its worst song, "Psychedelic Basement" [sic] sounds as if it were recorded there. In short, this album is a series of irritating, discordant remakes and outtakes, with absurd lyrics that are sung as if Chadbourne is trying to swallow his tonsils. If you enjoy this sort of "experimental" music, you'd be bet- ter off obtaining a copy of Camper Van Beethoven's last album. -Ian Carnpbell.
