ARTS The Michigan Daily Friday, March 4, 1988 Pane 7 Brass Fantasy will blow you awa .,, By Marc N. aras Sometimes dreams come true. This Friday night will be one of those times as Eclipse Jazz hosts a performance with Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy. Brass Fantasy is a magical "little Big Band" that covers an eccentric musical repertoire with grace, humor, and panache. To para- phase George M. Cohan; whatever they do they put a little relish on it. Their leader is trumpeter Lester Bowie. Born in Frederick, Maryland, in 1941, Bowie's family moved to St. Louis where the infant child grew to be a man. It seems Brass flows through Bowie's blood. Young Lester was a third generation trumpeter who began blowing at nine, learning from his father who was an experienced player with a thorough knowledge of the wide canon for brass instruments. Later lessons came from a member of a Symphony Orchestra. As a young 'man, Bowie came under the influ- ence of modern trumpeters like Kenny.Dorham as well as a growing and, abiding respect for "Pops" - Louis Armstrong. There was more schooling in Dallas - and the most important schooling - up and down the road with all manners of funk and soul bands. Soul Music. With three albums to its credit, Brass Fantasy consists of a core of great brass players; trumpets, trom- bones, French horns, tubas, and drums that will appear in a rare acoustic (i.e. unamplified) session tonight. On hand will be Steve Turre on trombone (last seen in Ann Arbor with Woody Shaw), legendary French horn virtuoso Vincent Chancey (an old Sun Ra alumnus), the amazing Bob Stewart on tuba' (see Carla Bley and Bill Frisell LPs), and rhythm king Philip Wilson at the drumkit (who hasn't he played with?). Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy can shake you and caress you. They will move through a lovely arrangement of "I Only Have Eyes For You"; switch up with Willie Nelson's "Crazy" to leave you weepin'; swagger up "Blueberry Hill," and roar and whisper through a growing body of challenging original charts. Turre and other members provide ar- rangements and, as you will hear, everyone contributes. And Lester Bowie! In 1966, work with Richard Abrams' Experimental Band brought Bowie into contact with Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) which led to a long and fruitful relationship with saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. Bowie and Mitchell worked in a band that evolved into the Art Ensemble of Chicago - one of the most sig- nificant groups of any sort of music or art form in the last quarter cen- tury. Bowie also pursued a solo touring and recording career and often con- tributes to other artists' gigs and recording dates. He has risen to prominence on his instrument during the last 15 years, and his newest band, with its musical strength and personnel, is the best testament to GOING PLACES ***EUR~OPE CHIARTERS*** Amsterdam from $418, Paris from $568 Frankfurt from $428 London from $468 Eurail Youth p ass $320 ***ORIENT SUPERFARES*** Bangkok $969, Hong Kong$799 Minawa $999 Osaka939 .
